MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf is tied for sixth after day one of the Class AA State Championships at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City. Mitchell shot +31 as a team, tied with Brookings and eight shots behind fifth place Yankton. Harrisburg is in first place after Monday, shooting +7 as team to hold a four-shot edge over O’Gorman. Asher Dannenbring led the Kernels with a +4 (76) to be in a four-way tie for 10th place. Dannenbring had a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole. Mitchell’s Everett Morrison also picked up a birdie on the fourth and 17th hole on his way to a +6 (78). Morrison is in a three-way tie for 21st. O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney leads the field with a -4 (68), four shots better than Gavin Weir of Harrisburg. Mauney had six birdies on the day and was -3 over his last five holes. The second and final day of the Class AA Boys State Golf Championships starts at 9 am on Tuesday.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer secured the No. 14 seed in Class AA and will face No. 3 seed Pierre on Tuesday night at 5 pm in the SoDak16. Pierre won at Mitchell on September 25th, 2-0. The winner advances to the AA girls soccer state tournament. Taryn Thomas and Kassedy Knippling were named to the ESD All-Conference team on Monday.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer secured the No. 16 seed in Class AA and will face No. 1 seed SF Lincoln on Tuesday night at 7 pm in the SoDak16. The Kernels and Patriots did not meet in the regular season.  The winner advances to the AA boys soccer state tournament. Sam Mullenmeister was named to the ESD All-Conference team on Monday.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Class AA state tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10. Mitchell finished second behind Harrisburg at the ESD conference meet earlier this week in Yankton.

— Mitchell Kernels football has its final road game of the season on Friday when they take on Brandon Valley at 6 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels volleyball, 9-4 on the season, will host Rapid City Central on Friday at 6:30 pm.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Sara Sudenga and Allision Meyerink sit 1-2 after the first round of the Mustang Derby at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City. Sudenga shot a +4 (76) during her opening round to lead all golfers, while Meyerink is tied for second, two shots back at +6 (78). As a team, Dakota Wesleyan shot +40, which puts them in second place and 14 shots behind Morningside. The second and final round starts later this morning.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will be at Doane on Friday at 7:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts No. 4 Morningside next Saturday at 1 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— Three South Dakota State Jackrabbits were honored Monday as Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week. Punter Max Pelham received the special teams award, wide receiver Alex Bullock was named the Newcomer of the Week and center Shane Willenbring claimed the Offensive Lineman of the Week award following SDSU’s 35-30 win at Youngstown State. Bullock set career highs with 10 catches for 162 yards, while Pelham successfully flipped the field on multiple occasions, punting four times for an average of 49 yards.

— South Dakota State volleyball hosts Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer will be at Denver on Thursday at 8 pm.

— South Dakota State football returns home on Saturday to face Northern Iowa at 2 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball host St. Thomas on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD women’s soccer will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD football will be at Indiana State next Saturday at Noon.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
— Parkston’s Landon Weber is tied for second after day one of the Class A Boys Golf Championships at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion. Weber shot an opening round -1(71) and is tied with Matt DeBeer of Dakota Valley. Hayden Heig of St. Thomas More holds a two-shot lead with a -3 (69). Weber had five birdies on the day and was -3 through his first 11 holes. The Trojans are in eighth place in the 17-team field with a score of +51, just three shots behind sixth place West Central. Dakota Valley leads the team standings with a +3 (291), six shots better than Vermillion. The second and final day of the Class A Boys State Golf Championships starts at 9 am on Tuesday at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion.

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYOFFS – TUESDAY (GAME 3)
Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners, 3 pm FS1 – Series tied 1-1
New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays, 7 pm on FS1 – Toronto leads the series 2-0

MLB
— Blake Snell allowed one hit in six shutout innings, striking out nine, as the Los Angeles Dodgers turned back Philadelphia’s late rally for a 4-3 victory over the Phillies in Game 2 of their NL Division Series. Freddie Freeman made a game-saving defensive play at first base and Shohei Ohtani delivered an RBI single that helped the Dodgers take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five playoff. Will Smith also had a two-run single in a four-run seventh. The defending World Series champs can reach their 17th National League Championship Series with a Game 3 win Wednesday back home in Los Angeles.

— Milwaukee outfielder Jackson Chourio hit a three-run homer after Andrew Vaughn had a three-run shot to tie the game in the first inning on Monday night in the Brewers 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of their NL Division Series. Milwaukee used seven different pitchers on the night as rookie Jacob Misiorowski got the win, throwing three shutout innings, allowing only one hit.

NFL
— Trevor Lawrence tripped, got up and scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining, as the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Kansas City 31-28. Lawrence ran for two touchdowns on the night and also threw for a score. Devin Lloyd returned an interception 99 yards for a score for Jacksonville. Patrick Mahomes accounted for two touchdowns and Kareem Hunt ran for two scores for the Chiefs.

— Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is facing a felony battery charge for what authorities say was a fight over parking. It carries a potential sentence of one to six years in prison. The incident happened early Saturday in Indianapolis. A police affidavit alleges the 38-year-old Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, confronted a 69-year-old truck driver. The driver pulled a knife to defend himself. The former New York Jet was pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times. He remains hospitalized in stable condition. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are possible.
