MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell senior Asher Dannenbring won the ESD Conference boys golf tournament on Monday at the Brookings Country Club with a 2-under-par 70 on Monday, finishing three strokes ahead of Watertown’s Johnathan Lake. Dannenbring had an eagle on the first hole and shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine. As a team, the Kernels finished seventh with a 313, 10 strokes behind first place Brookings. Eli Konrad shot a 78 for Mitchell, while Mason Moody carded an 80 and Dayton Adams an 85. The Class AA boys golf tournament is set for Oct. 5-6 in Aberdeen.
— Mitchell girls tennis continues play on Tuesday at the ESD Conference tournament in Sioux Falls, with the Class AA state tournament scheduled for Oct. 8-9 in Rapid City.
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball, 4-7 on the season, will be at SF Jefferson on Tuesday at 7 pm. Coverage starts with the KORN pregame show at 6:45 pm. The Kernels are coming off a 3-0 win last Thursday vs. SF Roosevelt.
— Mitchell Kernel football, 3-2 on the season, will be at Watertown on Friday night at 7 pm. Coverage starts with the KORNer Booth pregame show at 6 pm. The Kernels are coming off a 34-20 homecoming loss to West Central last week.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 3-7-1 on the season, will be at Tea Area on Tuesday at 6 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer, 3-8-1 on the season, will be at Tea Area on Tuesday at 8 pm.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
— Aberdeen Roncalli won the Region 3A boys golf meet Monday at Lakeview Golf Course, defeating Winner by two strokes, 306-308. Roncalli’s Harper Schnabel won the individual title with a 4-under-par 68. Winner had four golfers finish in the top 10. Parkston finished third as a team with a 330, earning the final team qualifying spot for the Class A state tournament. The state meet is Oct. 5-6 at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football, 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC, visit No. 7 Morningside on Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
— No. 12 Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 13-5 overall and 2-4 in the GPAC, return to action on Friday at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer, 2-1-2 on the season, will be at Doane on Saturday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer, 2-2-1 on the season, will be at Doane on Saturday at 7:15 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football, 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MVFC, will be at No. 10 Illinois State on Saturday at 6 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Omaha on Thursday at 6:30 pm. The Jacks swept USD 3-0 on Friday night in Vermillion to improve to 5-7 on the season and 1-0 in the Summit League.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 6-2-2 on the season, will be at North Dakota State on Saturday at 7 pm
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football, 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, returns home on Saturday for Dakota Days, hosting Indiana State at 2 p.m.
— USD volleyball will be at St. Thomas on Thursday at 7 pm. The Coyotes were swept by SDSU 3-0 on Friday night in Vermillion to fall to 7-5 on the season and 0-1 in the Summit League.
— USD women’s soccer, 3-4-3 on the season, will be at North Dakota on Saturday at 1 pm.
NFL
— The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. The move comes after Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart was ruled out for the rest of the regular season with a knee injury. McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft and started 10 games for Minnesota last season. He lost the Vikings’ starting job to Kyler Murray and had fallen behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart. McCarthy is expected to begin his Giants tenure in a reserve role, while Jameis Winston remains the starter.
— Case Keenum threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Chicago Bears beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-7 on Monday night. Making his first start in nearly three years, Keenum completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards. Kalif Raymond caught six passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Chicago improved to 2-1, while Philadelphia also fell to 2-1 after committing three turnovers.
— Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett is facing a six-week recovery timeline following knee surgery. Garrett was placed on injured reserve after the season opener against San Francisco. He could miss games through Week 8, with a potential return Nov. 8 against Washington. Garrett is determined to return sooner, but the Rams say they will not rush his recovery.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The U.S. Senate has passed a sweeping bipartisan bill aimed at regulating college sports, including athlete payments and transfers. The measure passed 77-22 and would give the NCAA new authority to enforce national rules. It would allow schools to share up to $21.5 million in revenue with athletes, with additional payments through a retention fund. The bill would also limit athletes to one free transfer over five years, with some exceptions. The legislation includes new health and scholarship protections for athletes, but critics say it does not do enough to address the money flowing to coaches, schools and conferences. The bill now faces an uncertain path in the House.
MLB
— Major League Baseball is exploring the possibility of hosting a game at a national park. The Washington Post reports the league has discussed the idea with the Trump administration, including potential sites at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. No permit has been issued, and the White House says the proposal is not an administration priority. The idea remains in the early stages, with a game potentially not happening until 2028 or later.

— A’ja Wilson has been named the Associated Press WNBA Player of the Year for a third consecutive season, earning the honor for the fourth time overall. Angel Reese won Defensive Player of the Year, while Minnesota rookie Olivia Miles was a unanimous Rookie of the Year selection. Caitlin Clark earned Comeback Player of the Year honors after averaging 22.3 points and 8.3 assists. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve was named Coach of the Year, and Dallas’ Jessica Shepard won Most Improved Player.
