MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels football picked up a 51-13 season opening win vs. Douglas on Friday behind five touchdowns from Parker Denne and a 400-yard, 4 touchdown game from quarterback T.J. Jellis. Denne had eight catches for 246 yards and three touchdowns. Denne also had a 55-yard punt return in the first quarter and a one-yard touchdown run on Mitchell’s first drive. Senior QB T.J. Jellis set a new school record with 420 passing yards on 20-of-26 passing. Hudson Borgan also added seven catches for 111 receiving yards and a touchdown. The Kernels had 512 yards of offense and also got a 43-yard field goal from Hunter Magee in the fourth quarter. Mitchell, 1-0 on the season, will be at Brookings on Friday at 7 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 6 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball opened its season with a 3-0 sweep of Sturgis on Friday. Mitchell would go 0-4 on Saturday at the Huron Invite with losses to Brookings, Spearfish, Chester and Dell Rapids. The Kernels, 1-4 on the season, will be at Sioux Falls Washington on Thursday at 7 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis finished second overall at the Rapid City Invite over the weekend, led by a Flight 6 singles title from Mia Larson and a first-place finish by Elly Clement and Matteah Graves at Fight 2 doubles. The Kernels finished with 148 team points, behind first place Rapid City Stevens 207.5 points. Mitchell will host Pierre on Friday at 10 am at Hitchcock Park, followed by a 4 pm match against Spearfish.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer won its first match of the season on Saturday at Brookings 1-0. Mitchell, 1-4 on the season, will be at Huron next week on Thursday, September 12th at 4 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer improved to 3-3 on the season with a X-X win at Groton on Monday. The Kernels will be at Huron next week on Thursday, September 12th at 6 pm.
— Silas Holdeman of Mitchell Christian won the first cross country meet of the season on Saturday at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex with Mitchell’s Hunter Patton coming in second. Holdeman finished in 17 minutes, six seconds, while Patton was three second behind. Berklee Mills of Platte-Geddes won the girls 5,000 meters in 22 minutes, 12 second, followed by Londyn Schroeder of Mitchell in second at 22 minutes, 24 seconds. Mitchell cross country will compete at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls at Yankton Trail Park on Friday at 6:30 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football will host Mt. Marty on Saturday at 6 pm. The Tigers opened the season last Thursday with a 34-3 loss at Dakota State.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball went 3-1 over the weekend in Sioux City with wins over Mayville State, Dickinson State (N.D.) and St. Ambrose (Iowa). The Tigers, 4-5 on the season, will be at Waldorf on Wednesday at 7:30 pm to start its GPAC conference schedule.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer tied Minnesota-Crookston on Sunday 1-1 in an exhibition match. The Tigers head to New Ulm, Minnesota, on Wednesday to face Martin Luther College at 4:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer lost to Governors State on Sunday 4-1. The Tigers, 0-2-1 on the season, will be at Martin Luther College on Wednesday at 2 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football will be at Wisconsin on Saturday at 2:30 pm. The Coyotes started the season with a 45-3 win last Thursday vs. Northern State.
— USD volleyball swept Air Force and Fordham over the weekend in Colorado to start the season 2-0. The Coyotes will compete at the Northern Kentucky Invite starting on Friday vs. Louisville and matches against Missouri and Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
— USD women’s soccer lost 3-0 at Kansas State on Sunday to fall to 2-2-1 on the season. The Coyotes will be at Central Michigan on Thursday at Noon.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football will host Incarnate Word on Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbits lost its season opener last Saturday at Oklahoma State 44-20 to end SDSU’s 29 game winning streak. The pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio FM 101.3/AM 1490 and KORNRadio.com
— South Dakota State women’ soccer won its third straight match with a 3-0 win at Green Bay on Sunday. The Jacks have outscored their opponents 9-0 over their three-match win streak. SDSU, 4-2 on the season, hosts Drake on Sunday at 1 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball started its season 3-0 over the weekend at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta with wins over Florida A&M, Indiana State and Georgia State. The Jacks will have three matches at the Western Illinois Invitational this weekend, starting with UIC and Western Illinois on Friday, followed by a single match on Saturday vs. Fort Wayne.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Trevor Larnach and Brooks Lee homered to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. The Twins remained 3 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland and moved a game ahead of Kansas City for the AL’s second wild-card spot. Game two of the four game series at Tampa Bay is tonight at 5:50 pm.

— A juvenile suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the chest Saturday afternoon during an attempted robbery in central San Francisco. The 23-year-old Pearsall was released Sunday from San Francisco General Hospital. He had been listed in fair condition. Pearsall was walking alone carrying shopping bags to his car shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday when a suspect attempted to rob him with a gun. Officers in the area responded immediately and provided emergency medical aid and arrested the suspect. Police said there was no indication Pearsall was targeted because he is a player for the city’s football team. Pearsall was drafted in the first round in April by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Treshaun Ward totaled 138 offensive yards, including a 13-yard touchdown reception, against his former team as Boston College upset No. 10 Florida State 28-13 as a 16-point underdog. A Tampa native who played at Florida State from 2019-22, Ward had 77 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving as Boston College had 263 yards rushing
— The Sept. 1 deadline for the Mountain West and Washington State and Oregon State to renew their football scheduling arrangement passed without an agreement, and the conference said Monday it is anticipating making schedules for next season without the Pac-12 schools. The announcement does not necessarily close the door to the two sides agreeing to another arrangement as the 12-team Mountain West typically does not release its conference football schedule until December or January. Oregon State and Washington State are operating as a two-team league this season and intend to do so in 2025 as well after 10 Pac-12 schools left to other power conferences this year.

— Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals by beating No. 14 Tommy Paul 7-6, 7-6, 6-1. Sinner moved into a showdown against 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev. Sinner is a 23-year-old from Italy who claimed his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January by defeating Medvedev in the final in five sets after dropping the first two.
WNBA
— Caitlin Clark had 28 points and 12 assists on Sunday as the Indiana Fever overcame a record-tying nine 3-pointers from Arike Ogunbowale in a 100-93 victory over the Dallas Wings. Kelsey Mitchell added 36 points for Indiana, who now moved over .500 for the first time on the season at 17-16.

— Star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday by the San Diego Padres after being sidelined for more than two months with a stress reaction in his right thighbone. The Padres entered the day in a virtual tie with Arizona for the NL’s top wild card playoff spot. Tatis last played on June 21. He was hitting .279 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs when he went on the IL.
— Jacob DeGrom likely will make his fourth rehab start Saturday in his comeback from elbow surgery, though the two-time Cy Young Award winner said his return to the Texas Rangers after more than 16 months could be an option that night. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy later acknowledged that deGrom making his big league season debut was an option and had been discussed with the 36-year-old right-hander. But Bochy said the plan “is still for him to start down there.”
— Freddie Freeman hit two homers and had five RBIs, while Shohei Ohtani stole three bases as the Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-6. Teoscar Hernández went 5 for 5 to help Los Angeles take three of four games in the series. The Dodgers now have a six-game lead over Arizona with 24 games to play.
— Gavin Williams went seven innings as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2. Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor each hit two-run homers for AL Central-leading Cleveland, which won for the fourth time in five games. The Royals have now lost six games in a row after holding a first-place tie with Cleveland one week ago.
— Milwaukee’s Willy Adames tied a major league record with his 13th three-run homer of the season, going deep on his 29th birthday to lift the NL Central-leading Brewers over the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 for their sixth win in seven games. Adames homered for the fifth consecutive game, matching a Brewers record. Adames’ 13 three-run homers equaled Ken Griffey Jr. in 1996.
— Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson tied a franchise record for shortstops with his 34th home run as the Orioles extended the White Sox losing streak to 11 with a 13-3 rout of Chicago. The White Sox dropped to 31-108 and lost its 20th straight game in which Chris Flexen started, setting a major league record for most consecutive losses in a pitcher’s starts.
— Luis Severino pitched seven innings, while Francisco Lindor reached base in a career-high 31 consecutive games as the Mets beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1. The Mets have won five straight and 12 of 17 to move within a half-game of Atlanta for the final National League wild card spot.
— Joe Musgrove pitched six strong innings and Fernando Tatis Jr. went 0 for 4 in his first game back since June 21 as the San Diego Padres beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0. Luis Arraez had two RBI singles for the Padres, who edged ahead of Arizona and into the NL’s top wild card spot.
— The Reds Santiago Espinal’s well-placed bloop single drove in two runs in the fifth inning as Cincinnati beat Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros 5-3. Ty France had four hits as the Reds ended Houston’s five-game win streak.
— Oakland’s Shea Langeliers led off the ninth inning with his second home run of the game and first career walkoff hit, giving the Athletics a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners.
— Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen homered during Pittsburgh’s four-run eighth inning as the Pirates cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 5-3 victory. The Cubs returned home after closing out an 8-1 trip with six consecutive victories.
