— Mitchell Kernels volleyball will at Huron on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. The Kernels are 2-4 on the season.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer host Yankton on Tuesday starting with the girls match at 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis hosts SF Washington on Thursday at 4 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels football, 1-1 on the season, hosts Douglas on Saturday for the annual Kernel Bowl at 6 pm. Mitchell is coming off a 47-27 at Spearfish last Friday.
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf returns to action on Friday at the Yankton Invitational.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf will compete at the Siouxland Invitational in Sioux City on Tuesday and Wednesday.
— Dakota Wesleyan football, 1-1 on the season, will be at Waldorf on Saturday at 6 pm. The Tigers are coming off a 34-21 win over Doane last week.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 11-1 on the season, host Dordt in their home opener on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers went 3-0 over the weekend in Omaha.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer, 0-1 on the season, hosts Northern Iowa Area Community College in an exhibition match on Wednesday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s golf returns to action September 14 at the Siouxland Invitational.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State has finalized its 2026-27 men’s basketball schedule, the second season under head coach Bryan Petersen. The Jackrabbits open the season Nov. 3 at Kansas State before making their home debut Nov. 6 against Briar Cliff. SDSU will face Northern Colorado in Rapid City on Nov. 14. The nonconference schedule includes a home-and-home series with Abilene Christian, games against Idaho State, Milwaukee, Idaho and Eastern Kentucky, along with a Dec. 21 matchup against Green Bay at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. SDSU will also compete in the inaugural Second Line Showcase in New Orleans, facing South Alabama and Fresno State over Thanksgiving. The Jackrabbits open Summit League play Jan. 7 at Kansas City.
— South Dakota State football, 1-1 on the season, host New Haven on Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 34-18 loss to Northwestern.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 4-1-1 on the season, will be at Weber State on Thursday at 8 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball, 4-3 on the season, will compete at the Kansas Invitational this week taking on the 22nd ranked Jayhawks on Friday at 1 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football, 2-0 on the season, host Eastern Washington on Saturday at 1 pm. The Coyotes won at Northern Colorado last week 38-23.
— USD volleyball, 5-1 on the season, will be at Colorado State on Thursday at 8 pm. The Coyotes then takes on Wyoming on Friday at 7 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Riley Greene had three hits, including a two-run homer, while Kevin McGonigle added a solo shot to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Joe Ryan lasted four innings for Minnesota in his return from the injured list. Trevor Larnach homered and scored twice for the Twins, who are 4 ½ games out of a playoff spot with 18 to play.
MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL
— The Missouri Valley Football Conference has five teams ranked among the top 11 in the latest FCS Top 25 poll. South Dakota State remains No. 2 despite an 34-18 loss to Big Ten opponent Northwestern. Illinois State is No. 5, North Dakota moved up to No. 6, and Youngstown State is No. 10. South Dakota remains No. 11 after improving to 2-0 with a 38-23 win over Northern Colorado. Montana State remains No. 1, receiving all 57 first-place votes.
NFL
— Tua Tagovailoa has been named the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday that Tagovailoa won a monthslong competition with Michael Penix Jr., who will be inactive for the opener. Penix started nine games for Atlanta last season before suffering a season-ending torn ACL. Tagovailoa signed with Atlanta in March after six seasons with Miami.
— The New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to terms on a record-setting four-year, $135 million extension. The deal includes $102 million guaranteed. Gonzalez is now the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, eclipsing the four-year, $132 million extension that Devon Witherspoon received from Seattle last month. Gonzalez, the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL draft, has been an All-Pro and Pro Bowl cornerback.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— No. 19 SMU rallied past Florida State 27-24 Monday night in a game delayed 1 hour, 45 minutes by a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium. The outage knocked out lights, game clocks, replay boards and sideline communication systems. Four generators restored enough power for the game to be played. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings overcame two interceptions, completing 26 of 36 passes for 430 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Reed kicked the game-winning 20-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining. SMU totaled 585 yards and improved to 1-0, while Florida State fell to 1-1.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
— Breanna Stewart scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists as the United States bounced back from a scare against Italy with a 105-64 rout of the Czech Republic Monday at the FIBA Women’s World Cup. The U.S. will play in the quarterfinals Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Hungary and Japan.
MLB
— Shohei Ohtani says he will most likely not pitch again this season as he focuses on hitting for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani returned to the lineup Monday after missing four games because of multiple injuries, including right biceps and left knee issues. He has not pitched since July 3 and last threw in a bullpen session Aug. 28. Ohtani went 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts this season, striking out 95 in 85 2/3 innings. At the plate, he is batting .277 with 30 home runs and 11 stolen bases.
— Aaron Judge is back with the New York Yankees after missing more than three months with a broken right rib. The three-time MVP was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Monday. Judge has not played since May 31 and will return without a minor league rehab assignment. The Yankees enter Tuesday’s three-game series against Colorado at 81-62, four games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East and two games ahead of Boston for the top American League wild card. Judge is batting .248 with 17 home runs and 38 RBIs this season.

— Jackson Chourio singled home two runs to spark a three-run rally in the eighth inning and made a diving catch for the final out in the ninth as the Milwaukee Brewers came from behind to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3.
— Jesús Luzardo struck out 12 and tossed two-hit ball in his first career shutout in 150 starts, while Kyle Schwarber hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies split a four-game series with the NL East-leading Braves and cut the division lead to four games.
— Arizona’s Lars Nootbaar had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning then the Diamondbacks followed with four more runs and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The game was scoreless through nine innings.
— Nick Pivetta pitched five shutout innings in his return from a long stay on the injured list as the San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 to keep pace in the National League playoff race. The Padres remained a half-game behind Arizona for the final NL wild card.
— Adley Rutschman hit a three-run homer, while Brayan Bello pitched five scoreless innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 for their fifth straight victory.
— Trevor Rogers allowed one run pitching into the eighth inning, while Coby Mayo homered twice as the Baltimore Orioles beat Cleveland 6-4 to snap a six-game losing streak.
— Jeff McNeil legged out an infield single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 after blowing a four-run lead. The Blue Jays stay one game back of Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Teoscar Hernández hit a three-run homer, while Emmet Sheehan tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in his first major league outing since Aug. 2 as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-3.
— Shay Whitcomb chopped a single with one out in the 11th inning for his first career game-ending RBI as the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4.
— Rookie A.J. Ewing had three hits and drove in three runs as the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 9-4.
