Castlewood 10, Clark 1 –
Kellan Benck pitched seven innings, allowing zero earned runs, five hits and 10 strikeouts. Gus Steiger with a HR in the seventh inning and Alex Gauer with an inside-the-park HR in the sixth. Castlewood with six runs in the first two innings.

Platte 12, Four Corners 1 (7 innings) – Preston Nedved with two home runs, six RBI’s and three runs scored for Platte. Travis Gant got the win, throwing seven innings, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis started its season on Tuesday with a pair of 9-0 wins in Huron vs. St. Thomas More and Aberdeen Roncalli. The Kernels will head to Sioux Falls later in the week to compete in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Thursday and Friday. Mitchell finished fifth last season at the Class AA state tournament, while going 16-2 in duals.

— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts its season on Friday when they travel to Harrisburg. The girls varsity match is at 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm. The Kernels host Tea Area in their home opener on Saturday with the girls match at 11 am, followed by the boys at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer played to a 2-2 tie vs. Gillette Community College in an exhibition match on Monday at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex. The Tigers travel to Wisconsin next Saturday, August 23 for an exhibition vs. St. Norbert College.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer defeated Gillette Community College 4-0 in an exhibition match on Monday at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex. The Tigers host Southeast Community College on Saturday at 5 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer starts the 2025 regular season this Thursday at Missouri at 7 pm.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer was picked to finish second in the Summit League preseason poll released on Tuesday. North Dakota State and SDSU were separated by just one point in the poll. NDSU, which claimed the 2024 Summit League regular season title, received six first-place votes and a total of 60 points. The Jackrabbits had three first-place votes and 59 points. SDSU has won the past two Summit League women’s soccer tournaments to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. USD was sixth in the poll.

— South Dakota State Athletics has partnered with the Veteran Tickets Foundation (Vet Tix) to provide free tickets to Jackrabbit home games during the 2025-26 season. Eligible veterans, service members, and families can claim tickets by creating a verified account at VetTix.org. Vet Tix is a nonprofit founded by veterans and has given out nearly 30 million free event tickets since 2008.

— USD women’s soccer starts the regular season on Thursday vs. Northern Iowa at 4 pm.

MLB

— Sal Frelick and Brice Turang homered off Paul Skenes as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-0 for their 11th consecutive victory. Christian Yelich, Andrew Vaughn and Caleb Durbin also went deep as major league-leading Milwaukee improved to 27-5 in its last 32 games. The Brewers’ 11-game winning streak is their second of the season and the second-longest in franchise history.

— Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho homered as the Toronto Blue Jays became the first AL team to reach 70 wins by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the AL East-leading Blue Jays improved to 23-11 against NL opponents. The Cubs have lost five of seven.

— Pete Alonso broke the Mets’ franchise home run record, going deep twice and knocking in three runs as New York beat the Atlanta Braves 13-5. Alonso’s first home was his 253rd. He moved past Darryl Strawberry, who had held the team record since 1988.

— Shohei Ohtani lined into a triple play in the sixth inning, then hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth, but the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Jo Adell’s walkoff single in the 10th. The Dodgers fell into a first-place tie with San Diego atop the NL West after their third consecutive loss. The Angels are 5-0 this season vs. L.A.

— Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Jackson Merrill went deep in the eighth inning as the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1.

— Vinnie Pasquantino doubled, homered and drove in five runs as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Washington Nationals 8-5 to reach the .500 mark for the second time since mid-June.

— George Kirby pitched seven three-hit innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 for their eighth victory in a row.

— Alex Bregman homered against his former team for a second straight game and Carlos Narváez added a three-run shot to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 14-1 win over the Houston Astros. Dustin May scattered five singles across six scoreless and struck out eight in his second start for Boston since a trade from the Dodgers. The loss drops the Astros into a tie with Seattle for the AL West lead.

— José Ramírez became Cleveland’s leader in multi-homer run games with a drive to right field in the eighth inning as the Guardians defeated the Miami Marlins 4-3. It was the 27th multi-homer game of Ramírez’s career, surpassing Hall of Famer Jim Thome and Albert Belle for the franchise lead.

— Brady Singer pitched six shutout innings and Spencer Steer drove in three runs as the Cincinnati Reds beat Philadelphia 6-1, halting the Phillies’ four-game win streak.

— Yoendrys Gómez struck out seven in five innings, while Edgar Quero had three hits and three RBIs, as the Chicago White Sox scored five runs in the fifth inning in a 9-6 win over the Detroit Tigers.

— Ketel Marte’s solo home run to deep left field with two out in the ninth inning gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

— Jacob Lopez struck out nine in seven shutout innings as the Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0. Lopez allowed four hits and did not walk a batter.

— Kyle Freeland gave up five hits in a season-high 7 1/3 innings and Hunter Goodman hit a home run as the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 to snap an eight-game losing streak.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Aaron Judge hit his first homer in nearly three weeks, Giancarlo Stanton had his first four-hit game in nearly two years, and Carlos Rodón allowed one hit in seven innings as the New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-1. Stanton went 4 for 5 for his first four-hit game since Aug of 2023. Rodón allowed a leadoff single to Austin Martin for the only Twins hit of the game.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football was selected to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the GPAC Preseason Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. The Tigers received 32 points after finishing 4-7 last year. Morningside is ranked No. 1 with 99 points, followed by Northwestern with 89 points. DWU opens its season at home against Dakota State on Saturday, August 30th at 7 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES
— Sioux Falls is back at the Little League World Series for the second straight year winning the Midwest Region Championship last week over Fargo, N.D. 6-0. Sioux Falls opens against the host-state champions Glenmoore Eagle (Pennsylvania) on Thursday at 6 pm CST with the game airing on ESPN. Sioux Falls best-ever finish at the LLWS was fourth back in 2021.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer denies allegations of sports gambling after a report showed he made Venmo payments labeled for “sports gambling” in 2022. Mateer, who was at Washington State at the time, said Tuesday these were inside jokes with friends and not actual bets. He assured his teammates, coaches, and the NCAA that he has never gambled on sports. Oklahoma is ranked No. 18 in the AP Preseason Top 25 College Football poll.

MLB
— Major League Baseball dropped its plan to start the World Series early if both League Championship Series are short, announcing Tuesday that this year’s Fall Classic will start on Oct. 24. MLB last year said Game 1 would move up from Oct. 25 to Oct. 22 if the LCS ended by Oct. 19. Game 7 of this year’s World Series would be on Nov. 1
