PALACE CITY BASEBALL

Palace City Post 18 split a road doubleheader against Harrisburg Gold on Tuesday. Tyler Christensen gave up just four hits and two runs over six and one-third innings and Jaxson Hartman collected three hits including a solo home run in Palace City Baseball Post 18’s 5-2 win in game one. Christensen’s line also included four strike outs and two walks. Quinton Wilson collected the save by retiring the two batters he faced in the seventh. Kaiden Allen drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Brennen Penne and Dawson Adams each collected two hits for Post 18. Harrisburg Legion Gold won the second game 7-6. Post 18 led 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nick Riley hit a grand slam to give Harrisburg the lead. It was his second home run in the game. Post 18 tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a double by Carter McCormick, and a single by Jaxson Hartman. In the top of the sixth, Post 18 broke up the tie when Dawson Adams singled, scoring one run. Then a double by McCormick followed to extend the lead to 6-3. McCormick led Post 18 with two hits, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Palace City Post 18 (10-11) returns to Cadwell Park to play Huron for two games on Wednesday at 5 p.m. followed by one game against Parkston on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Sioux Falls Post 15 beat Palace City Baseball Junior Legion 6-5 in nine innings on Tuesday in game one of a twin bill. Palace City JL captured the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth after Jordon Ebert singled to center field, and Karsten Herges walked, each scoring one run. Blake Rehorst, Nolan Widstrom, Karsten Herges, and Jordon Ebert each drove in one run for JL Post 18. Paxton Peper went 3-for-5. Post 15 completed the sweep by winning game two 13-10. The teams combined for just 11 hits in the game. Nolan Widstrom led Palace City Junior Legion with two hits and two RBIs. The Junior Legion squad heads to Aberdeen for a twin bill on Wednesday.

Palace City Baseball 14u split a doubleheader at Renner on Tuesday. In game one, Kristopher Hatwan collected four hits and drove in three runs in a 10-9 victory. Renner scored seven runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 7-6, but Palace City responded with four runs in the top of fifth. Renner scored twice in the sixth and had the tying run at third with two outs, but Deyton Puetz got a foul out to end the game and earn the save. Gavin Auch was credited with the win, surrendering four hits and seven runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out two and walking five. PCBA 14u tallied 13 hits in the game with Preston Maeschen adding three hits and driving in three runs for PCBA 14u. Hatwan also had four of PCBA 14u 16 stolen bases in the game. Renner won the second game 9-7. Keniel Padilla led Palace City with two hits and two RBIs. Palace City Baseball 14U will play a doubleheader at Sioux Falls Post 15 on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Palace City Baseball 13U hosts Sioux Falls Post 15 for two games on Wednesday on Drake Field starting at 5 p.m.

Platte/Geddes WhiteCaps bested Scotland/Menno/Freeman/Canistota 4-1 on Tuesday. Kenyon Kuiper earned the win surrendering two hits and one run over six innings, striking out eight and walking three. Platte/Geddes WhiteCaps hosts Alexandria Post 41 on Thursday. Brayden Bahmuller went two for three and had four runs batted in as Alexandria Post 41 defeated Wagner 15-6 on Tuesday. Rhoen Marek and Kingston Feldhaus added three hits each in the win. Dominic Doom had two runs batted in and Frank Soukup had two hits for Wagner. Alexandria will travel to Platte on Thursday.

TUESDAY AMATEUR BASEBALL SCHEDULE

Alex Mizsak and Jack Gray combined on a four-hitter in Alexandria’s 10-0 against the Parkston Mudcats Tuesday night. Mizsak gave up two hits over four and one-third innings, striking out six and walking two. Gray struck out three in three and two-thirds innings for the save. Alexandria Angels amassed 14 hits in the game. Carter Brown, the number nine hitter for Alexandria Angels, had two doubles and three runs batted in. Ben Wilber went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Dakota Munger and Tyson Gau each had two hits for the Angels. Mason Herman took the loss for going six and one-third innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits, striking out two and walking four. Jeff Harris, Luke Bormann, Max Scott, and Gunnar Wilhelm each collected one hit for Mudcats. Alexandria is at Mount Vernon while Parkston will host Winner-Colome on Thursday. The Parkston Rays at Lesterville was cancelled. No word on whether the game will be rescheduled.

The Renner Monarchs (Class A) and Dell Rapids PBR (Class B) continue to lead their respective divisions in the latest South Dakota Amateur Baseball poll released on Tuesday. Class B — 1. Dell Rapids PBR; 2. Dell Rapids Mudcats; 3. Alexandria Angels; 4. Canova Gang; 6. Parkston Mudcats; 7. Platte Killer Tomatoes; 10. (Tie) Kimball-White Lake Nationals and Tabor Bluebirds. Receiving votes: Parkston Rays and Winner-Colome Pheasants.

Mitchell Kernel football is hosting a Fellowship of Christian Athletes youth football camp on Thursday, June 25, at Joe Quintal Field. The camp is open to students entering grades 5-8 this fall and costs $25 per athlete. Football activities will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and lunch will be provided for all campers afterward from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the MHS Commons. Campers need to wear T-shirts, shorts and football cleats for the camp, but are asked to bring tennis shoes for lunch or if activities need to be moved indoors due to weather. Registration is now open for the 2026 First Tee South Dakota youth golf program at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell. The program, open to kids ages 6 to 17, combines golf instruction with lessons focused on character development and life skills. Sessions will be held Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the summer, beginning June 29th, with class times divided by age group in the morning. The cost is $98, with financial assistance available to ensure all kids can participate. Equipment is provided, and families are encouraged to register early as space is limited. AJ Dybantsa is the No. 1 pick on a big NBA draft night for freshman stars and Michigan’s champions

The Washington Wizards selected forward AJ Dybantsa (dee-BAHNT-sah), who led the nation in scoring in his one season at BYU, with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. Dybantsa averaged 25.5 points, highlighted by a 43-point effort that broke BYU’s freshman scoring record. At 6-foot-9 and 217 pounds, Dybantsa has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant, who happens to be his favorite player. Durant grew up in the Washington area, and Wizards fans can only hope Dybantsa can live up to the comparisons. The Utah Jazz followed by choosing Kansas freshman guard Darryn Peterson with the No. 2 pick. Memphis took Duke freshman forward Cameron Boozer at No. 3 after Boozer was named AP national player of the year. Chicago took North Carolina freshman forward Caleb Wilson with the No. 4 pick. National champion Michigan saw forwards Morez Johnson Jr., and Yaxel Lendeborg join big man Aday Mara in going in the top 12 picks.

NCAA panel approves new eligibility rules giving Division I athletes 5 years to play 5 seasons

The NCAA adopted a new eligibility model for Division I athletes allowing five seasons of competition over a five-year period beginning upon initial college enrollment or the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever occurs first. The Division I Cabinet approved the change from the longstanding tenet of college sports that gave athletes five years to complete four seasons of competition with their eligibility clock starting at the time of enrollment, regardless of age. It eliminates waivers for extended eligibility except for pregnancy, religious missions or active-duty military service. No longer will extensions be considered for athletes who are injured.

Brendan Sorsby has to wait until 2027 to join the NFL

Brendan Sorsby will have to wait until 2027 to begin his NFL career. The NFL informed the 22-year-old quarterback on Tuesday that it will not hold a supplemental draft this year, and encouraged him to focus on preparing for possible entry into the league through the regular draft next year. The league told Sorsby of its decision in a letter that was obtained by The Associated Press. Sorsby had applied for the supplemental draft after a legal battle with the NCAA, which had declared him ineligible for making thousands of bets on sporting events worth at least $90,000 during his college career.

NHL exploring Texas expansion in Houston or Austin with billionaire Dan Friedkin and family

The NHL is exploring expansion to Texas, focusing on Houston or Austin, with a framework agreed upon with billionaire Dan Friedkin and his family. Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday that the Board of Governors executive committee endorsed the plan for the next six months. The total investment, including an expansion fee and building a new arena, would be $3.5 billion. Discussions initially centered on Houston before Austin joined the conversation. This move could make the NHL the largest professional sports league in North America. The league last expanded with the Seattle Kraken in 2021.

Dodgers pound out a season high-tying 17 hits in 12-3 win over Twins

Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages each had three of the Dodgers’ season high-tying 17 hits, Justin Wrobleski worked seven strong innings, and Los Angeles beat the Minnesota Twins 12-3 Tuesday night. Mookie Betts, Alex Freeland, Alex Call and Chuckie Robinson had two hits apiece for the Dodgers. Wrobleski (9-2) allowed five hits and two earned runs. After three consecutive Minnesota hits in the third inning, the left-hander retired 14 of the final 16 hitters he faced, allowing a hit and walk. Making his second career start, Minnesota’s Kendry Rojas stuck out four, walked three and allowed an earned run while throwing 50 pitches in two innings. He came off the injured list Sunday after missing almost a month with left elbow inflammation. Called up from Triple-A St. Paul for his Twins debut, Austin Voth (0-1) allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in four innings. Joe Ryan (5-3, 2.99). Ryan was moved back from his scheduled Tuesday start due to an illness. He will face Shohei Ohtani in the series finale tonight.

Miguel Vargas hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, Sean Burke struck out six in 6 1/3 innings, and the Chicago White Sox claimed sole possession of first place in the AL Central on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. The White Sox are 22-4 in their last 26 home games, 11-1 against the AL Central at home and their 16 one-run wins are the most in the majors.

Tampa Bay native Jac Caglianone continued his hot June by homering twice and driving in three runs in the Kansas City Royals’ 12-5 victory over the reeling Rays on Tuesday night.

Joey Loperfido hit a tiebreaking home run in the 11th inning and the Houston Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-7 on Tuesday. Loperfido’s first home run of the season came off former Toronto teammate Braydon Fisher (3-3).

Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered, drove in two runs and scored twice and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Cole Young hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning in his first major league game in his hometown to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Sandy Alcantara set the franchise career record for strikeouts and won his fifth consecutive start in June, leading the Miami Marlins to a 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Alcantara (8-4), who allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, surpassed Ricky Nolasco for the most strikeouts in club history with 1,002.

Bryson Stott’s three-run homer highlighted Philadelphia’s eight-run outburst in the ninth inning and the Phillies rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 14-9 on Tuesday night.

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a three-run homer, Dansby Swanson also went deep and drove in four and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 9-6 on Tuesday night.

Brandon Sproat pitched one-hit ball for six shutout innings and had a career-high 10 strikeouts, Hank Bauers and Andrew Vaughn drove in runs and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 on Tuesday night. Milwaukee (48-29) won a series at Great American Ball Park for the ninth straight time and has won 12 of the last 13.

Nolan Arenado and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had run-scoring hits and Arizona’s eventual winning run scored on a passed ball — all in the ninth inning — as the Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Tuesday night. All the runs in the game were scored in the ninth inning.

Wilyer Abreu and Nate Eaton drove in two runs each to back an 11-strikeout performance from Sonny Gray and the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Manny Machado hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to lead the San Diego Padres to a 7-6 walk-off win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. With Jackson Merrill at second, Machado sent a pitch from Raisel Iglesias (0-2) into center field to give the Padres their sixth walk-off victory of the season.

Rookie right-hander Ryan Johnson gave up one hit over six scoreless innings, Nolan Schanuel hit an early two-run home run and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Robbie Ray held the Athletics to an unearned run and two hits in eight innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night.
