MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels basketball host Tea Area for a doubleheader on Thursday with the girls game starting at 6 pm, followed by the boys at 7:30. The Mitchell girls are 6-3 on the season and have won five games in a row, coming off a 50-20 victory on Friday at Brookings. The Kernels boys are 5-3 on the season and currently the No. 6 seed in AA, coming off a 53-39 win at Brookings.
— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics finished with 143.65 points, claiming a triangular victory on Tuesday night against Brookings and Madison at Brookings high school. Mitchell’s Olivia Prunty took second place in the all-around at 35.7 points. Kyanna Groper finished first in the balance beam at 9.7 points, while also taking first in the uneven bars at 9.65 points. Abby Hohn won fault at 9.5 points. Mitchell competes at the Lolly Forseth Invitational on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sioux Falls Lincoln.
— Mitchell Kernels boys wrestling dropped a pair of duals on Tuesday night in Hartford, losing to West Central 63-16 and Madison 56-24. Mitchell’s Rocky Clark picked up a win at heavyweight vs. Madison to improve to 20-2 on the season. The Kernels travel to Brandon on Friday for another triangular against Watertown and Brnadon Valley starting at 5 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYA
— Dakota Wesleyan basketball will be at Morningside on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 6 pm. The DWU women have won nine games in a row after knocking off No. 10 Concordia on Sunday 78-69. The Tigers are 11-2 in the GPAC, one game behind first place Dordt. The DWU men have won three in a row to improve to 11-9 on the season. The Tigers are 6-6 in the GPAC, in a four-way tie for fifth place and just one game back of second place.
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Avery Broughton has been named the GPAC women’s basketball defensive player of the week for the second straight week. Broughton had five blocks last week in a win vs. Waldorf.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball is at North Dakota on Wednesday at 7 pm. The Jacks had their 67-game regular season conference winning streak end on Saturday vs. North Dakota State 76-68. SDSU is 14-5 on the season and 4-1 in the Summit League.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball is at St. Thomas on Thursday at 8 pm. The Jacks are 10-10 on the season and 3-2 in the Summit League. St, Thomas is currently in second place in the conference with a 4-1 record.
— South Dakota State wrestling host Cal Baptist for a dual on Friday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 24-18 loss at Wyoming on Sunday to fall to 9-2 on the season.

— Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones have been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Beltrán, in his fourth ballot appearance, received 84% of the votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Jones, in his ninth appearance, was picked on 78% of ballots. They will be inducted in Cooperstown, New York, on July 26, along with second baseman Jeff Kent.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Indiana is No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 college football poll after finishing a 16-0 season with a victory over Miami on Monday night. The Hoosiers are the third straight Big Ten national champion, following 2024 Ohio State and 2023 Michigan. No. 2 Miami ended with its highest ranking since the 2002 season. Mississippi, Oregon and Ohio State rounded out the top five. The Big Ten had three teams in the top five for the second straight year.
— Duke has filed a lawsuit against quarterback Darian Mensah seeking to block his efforts to transfer and reach a contract with another school to play elsewhere next season. The university filed its complaint on Monday that came three days after Mensah reversed his previously announced plan to return to the Blue Devils. The complaint states Duke’s two-season contract with Mensah runs through 2026. It also argues that the contract requires any dispute to go through arbitration to reach resolution.
NFL
— The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to hire former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator. McDaniel replaces Greg Roman after the Chargers’ Wild Card loss. McDaniel helped lead Miami to one of the NFL’s top offenses and now takes over with the task of leading Justin Herbert and getting the Chargers offense.
— Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison will not face a trespassing charge in Florida after prosecutors dismissed the case. Addison was arrested earlier this month at a Tampa-area casino, but the state dropped the misdemeanor charge and released his bond. Addison finished the season with more than 600 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
GOLF
— Rory McIlroy believes the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have grown “too far apart” to form an alliance and bring a splintered sport back together. McIlroy says “I just don’t see a world where it can happen at this point.” McIlroy was speaking ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic on the European tour. Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour from LIV has brought into sharper focus the fading hopes of any form of deal being struck by top officials on the two circuits.
NBA
— Keyonte George scored a career-high 43 points, while Jusuf Nurkic recorded his second career triple-double as the Utah Jazz rallied to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-122. Nurkic finished with 16 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in his first triple-double since Jan. 2019. Anthony Edwards scored 38 points for the Timberwolves, who blew a 15-point lead and closed out a four-game road trip with three straight losses.
— Alperen Sengun had 20 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists to help the Houston Rockets rally for a 111-106 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff was delayed by 22 minutes after a player bent one of the rims during warmups and it had to be replaced. The Rockets trailed by as many as 16 and were down by 10 starting the fourth quarter.
— Luka Doncic had 38 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets 115-107.
— Coby White scored 27 points and hit six of Chicago’s franchise record-tying 25 3-pointers as the Bulls beat the Los Angeles Clippers 138-110.
— Immanuel Quickley matched his career high with 40 points and added 10 assists as the Toronto Raptors defeated Golden State 145-127.
— Devin Booker scored 27 points as the Phoenix Suns beat the Philadelphia 76ers 116-110.
— Bam Adebayo scored 25 points as the Miami Heat cruised to a 130-117 road win over the Sacramento Kings.
