PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL
— Palace City Post 18 Legion Baseball split a road doubleheader at Pierre on Tuesday with Post 18 losing 1-0 in game one, while winning game two 11-0 in five innings. Palace City scored five runs in the third innings, followed by six more runs in the fifth inning. Carter McCormock got the win throwing five shutout innings with four strikeouts. In game one, Tyler Christensen threw six innings, allowing just one run with six strikeouts on 73 pitches. Post 18 returns home to face Sioux Falls Post 15 West on Wednesday at 5 pm. The pregame show on KORN begins at 4:45 pm.
— Palace City Junior Legion baseball swept a doubleheader at Huron on Tuesday winning 8-5 and 10-5.
— Palace City 13-and-under baseball split a road doubleheader on Tuesday at Brookings winning game one 10-9 before losing game two 10-9.
— Palace City 14-and-under baseball will be at Brookings for a noon doubleheader on Wednesday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State officials announced Tuesday that the Jackrabbits will face the University of North Carolina in a dual meet at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Friday, December 18th. It will mark the very first time the Tar Heels wrestling program has ever competed in the state of South Dakota. The matchup features an interesting storyline on the mats, as SDSU head coach Damion Hahn and North Carolina head coach Rob Koll spent twelve seasons coaching together at Cornell University before taking over their respective programs. Ticket sales and broadcast details for the December event will be released at a later date.
— South Dakota State University and Midco Sports are locking in an extension to keep the Jackrabbits on regional television screens. SDSU Athletics announced a multi-year renewal of their broadcast and sponsorship agreements with Midco on Tuesday. The deal cements Midco Sports as the primary broadcast home for Jackrabbit athletic programs. Midco will continue to provide live and on-demand regional coverage for football, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, and several other sports. The extended partnership also expands Midco’s physical footprint inside SDSU’s athletic facilities, adding new game-day fan experiences and in-venue signage at Dykhouse Stadium and First Bank and Trust Arena.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Yordan Alvarez’s grand slam highlighted a six-run fourth inning AS the Houston Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4. Twins pitcher Joe Ryan worked four innings, giving up six hits and six runs. Minnesota catcher Victor Caratini was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the first inning, giving the Twins an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Kreidler then hit a two-run single to give the Twins a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The final game of the three-game series is Wednesday at 7:10 pm.

— Kawhi Leonard is heading back to where he won his last NBA championship. The Toronto Raptors have struck trade agreement with the Los Angeles Clippers to bring Leonard back to Canada. In exchange for Leonard, the Raptors are sending forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a pick swap. The 35-year-old Leonard spent just one season in Toronto, leading the franchise to its only NBA title back in 2019. He is coming off a productive season with the Clippers where he averaged nearly 28 points per game.
— LeBron James has notified the Los Angeles Lakers that his eight-year run with the franchise is over. The 41-year-old will enter a record-extending 24th NBA season in a new uniform this fall. Free agency opened across the league yesterday, and James is expected to take meetings immediately. Insiders report that money is not a factor for the league’s all-time leading scorer. Instead, James is completely focused on landing with a championship contender. Potential landing spots already include a high-profile pairing with Steph Curry in Golden State, or reunions in Miami or Cleveland.
— The NBA has officially set the financial boundaries for the upcoming season, locking in the new numbers just ahead of free agency. League officials announced that the salary cap for the 2026-2027 season is set at nearly $165 million. That marks a jump of nearly 7% from last year. Meanwhile, the luxury tax threshold will clip the $200 million mark. Teams must spend a minimum of $148 million.

— Banished college quarterback Brendan Sorsby will not take legal action against the NFL over his draft status and will instead wait to become eligible for the 2027 NFL draft, according to a league memo sent to all 32 teams on Tuesday. The decision ends Sorsby’s bid to force his way into professional football this season after the NCAA handed him a lifetime ban for an extensive gambling problem. The 22-year-old quarterback had petitioned for entry into the NFL’s supplemental draft, but the league denied his request last week. Because Sorsby opted not to challenge the league’s decision in court, he is barred from signing an NFL contract or playing in the Canadian Football League for the 2026 season.

— Serena Williams made her return to singles competition on Tuesday, falling just short in a three-set match at Wimbledon. Playing her first competitive singles match in nearly four years, the 44-year-old Williams was defeated by 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint (6-3, 6-7 and 6-3). Serena is scheduled to take the court again later this week to play doubles alongside her older sister, Venus.

— The city of Milwaukee honored broadcaster Bob Uecker on Tuesday with a towering new addition to its downtown skyline. Brewers officials joined family members and fans to dedicate a massive 80-foot-wide by 100 foot tall mural of the late Hall of Fame. The beloved “Mr. Baseball” spent 54 seasons calling games for his hometown team before his passing last year at the age of 90. The colossal artwork on Jackson Street features Uecker in one of his trademark plaid blazers.
— Jake Bauers went 3 for 4 with a homer and Jackson Chourio also went deep in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 7-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
— Junior Caminero homered for the fifth straight game, a three-run shot that highlighted a six-run second inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
— Cade Civalli gave up one hit in seven innings and had a career-high 13 strikeouts in the Washington Nationals’ 8-1 victory over the Red Sox, snapping Boston’s five-game winning streak. Civalli, who was at the center of a scuffle in the fourth inning, yelled at Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras after striking him out, causing the benches to clear. Contreras, along with Red Sox manager Chris Tracy, teammate Nate Eaton and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas, were all ejected.
— Jacob deGrom pitched seven innings as the Texas Rangers beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 to extend their winning streak to six games. DeGrom allowed a two-run homer to Kyle Manzardo in the first before retiring 18 of the next 19 batters.
— Cristopher Sánchez allowed three hits in seven innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0. Sánchez struck out nine in becoming the first starting pitcher this season to reach 10 wins.
— Tarik Skubal pitched six innings of one-hit ball, while Riley Greene hit two of Detroit’s four homers off Cam Schlittler as the Tigers beat the Yankees 9-3 to send New York to its season-worst sixth straight loss. The Tigers hit five homers overall against the Yankees.
— Dansby Swanson hit two of Chicago’s five home runs as the Cubs held on for their fourth straight victory, 9-7 over the San Diego Padres. Alex Bregman, Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong added homers to help the Cubs win for the 10th time in 12 games.
— Javier Sanoja and Owen Caissie each hit three-run homers, and Joe Mack added a two-run shot as the Miami Marlins defeated the Colorado Rockies 14-3 to claim their franchise-best 20th win of June. The Marlins, who have the second-lowest payroll in MLB, have outscored opponents 133-80 in June, their best calendar month in franchise history. They are also the first team in MLB to win 20 games in a month this year.
— Tommy Edman had four hits including his first home run of the season as Dave Roberts became the fastest manager in history to reach 1,000 career wins after the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Athletics 9-3.
— Colson Montgomery and Junior Perez homered during Chicago’s seven-run third inning as the White Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-3.
— Nathan Church hit a three-run homer, while Nelson Velázquez added a solo shot as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 5-3. The Braves have lost 13 of their last 17 and have a 2 ½ game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East.
— Julio Rodriguez had three hits and scored twice, while Bryan Woo took a shutout into the seventh inning as the Seattle Mariners put together a five-run sixth to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-3.
— Ketel Marte homered in his fourth straight game, while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a three-run homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-2. The D-backs are 8-0 against the Giants this season.
— Nolan McLean and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout, while Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens both hit solo home runs as the New York Mets beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0.
