MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell’s Asher Dannenbring finished fourth on Monday during the Sanford Series boys golf event in Aberdeen with a 3-over-par 75 at Moccasin Creek. Carter McCormick finished 10th with a 78. In the girls division, Mitchell’s Maddie Childs finished 12th with a round of 86. The next stop in the Sanford Series is set for July 7 at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
— Mitchell White 13-and-under baseball, 7-13 on the season, host Harrisburg on Tuesday for a 4 pm doubleheader at Drake Field.
— Mitchell 18-and-under baseball (3-4 on the season) heads to its next tournament July 4-6, in Jamestown, North Dakota.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— Huron’s Blake Ellwein has committed to play basketball for South Dakota State. The 6-foot-9 forward is a two-time All-State selection, averaging over 20 points and six rebounds last season.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins start a three-game series in Miami tonight against the Marlins at 5:40 pm. The Marlins have won seven games in a row, while the Twins lost two of three over the weekend at first place Detroit. Joe Ryan gets the start for Minnesota. Ryan is 8-3 on the season with a 2.86 ERA. The Twins have won seven of his past nine starts on the mound. Minnesota is currently four games back in the Wild Card standings at 40-44 with 12 games remaining before the All-Star break.
MINNESOTA WILD
— The Minnesota Wild will play the upcoming season at Grand Casino Arena, after a naming rights deal with the tribal gaming and hospitality company that takes over for the arena’s original name, Xcel Energy Center. The Minnesota Wild announced on Monday a 14-year agreement with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe that takes effect on Sept. 3. The tribe operates two casino-resort complexes in east-central Minnesota, north of the Twin Cities. The arena, which has about 18,000 seats for hockey, opened in 2000 for the Wild’s inaugural season in the NHL on a 25-year naming rights deal with Xcel Energy that expired this summer.
HIGH SCHOOL
— Sioux Falls O’Gorman standout Libby Castelli has been named the 2025 Gatorade South Dakota Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The senior distance star won state titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter runs, set a meet record in the 800, and anchored O’Gorman’s sprint medley relay to a first place finish, earning Class AA MVP honors. Castelli also set a South Dakota record in the 1600 and posted a top-25 national time in the 3200. She’s the first South Dakota girl to win Gatorade honors in both cross country and track in the same school year. Castelli holds a 4.0 GPA and will run for the University of North Carolina next season.

WNBA
— The WNBA is expanding to 18 teams over the next five years, with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia all set to join the league by 2030. Cleveland will begin play in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia the season after, assuming they get approval from the NBA and WNBA Board of Governors. Toronto and Portland will enter the league next year. All three new teams announced Monday have NBA ownership groups. Each paid a $250 million expansion fee, which is about five times as much as Golden State dished out for a team a few years ago.

— The Miami Dolphins have agreed to trade three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers for three-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins are also trading tight end Jonnu Smith to the Steelers for a late-round pick swap. Ramsey will get a $1.5 million raise this season, bringing his 2025 compensation up to $26.6 million, sources told Schefter. Jonnu Smith will receive a one-year contract extension worth $12 million.

— The NBA has set the salary cap for the coming season at $154 million, the maximum allowed 10% increase over the level for this past season. The tax level for the 2025-26 season is $187 million, while the minimum team salary is $139 million.
— The Memphis Grizzlies and All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. are expected to agree to a five-year, $240 million max contract. Jackson averaged 22 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals over 74 games last season. He has spent all seven seasons with Memphis after being the No. 4 pick in the 2018 NBA draft out of Michigan State.
— The New York Knicks will interview two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown for a second time as they seek Tom Thibodeau’s replacement. Brown’s return this week will make him the first of the known candidates to get a second interview for the position that has been vacant for nearly a month. Brown led the Sacramento Kings to the playoffs in 2023, their first appearance in 17 years, and was voted coach of the year.
— The Brooklyn Nets are trading Cam Johnson to the Denver Nuggets for Michael Porter Jr. and a first-round draft pick.. The trade of forwards shortly after free agency opened sends Johnson back to the Western Conference, where he helped Phoenix reach the 2021 NBA Finals, two years before Porter helped the Nuggets win the title. The Nets will receive the Nuggets’ 2032 first-round pick in the deal. Johnson averaged a career-high 18 points in 57 games last season, while Porter averaged 18.2 points in 77 games last season.
— Jalen Williams is planning to have surgery on his right wrist after the Oklahoma City forward tore a ligament before the Thunder started their run to a championship, general manager Sam Presti said Monday. Williams played in all 23 playoff games in helping the Thunder win their first NBA title since moving to Oklahoma from Seattle 17 years ago. The 24-year-old Williams is expected to be ready for next season.

— Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke a tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 5-4. Guerrero went 2 for 4 with three RBIs as the Blue Jays won for the fourth time in five games to close within two games of the first place Yankees in the AL East.
— Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in eight innings, while Nick Castellanos homered as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 4-0. Wheeler allowed only six-hits over eight innings.
— Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 33rd homer and Randy Arozarena connected twice as the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. George Kirby allowed one run and three hits in six innings, striking out five.
— Wilyer Abreu hit a grand slam and had an inside-the-park solo home run for Boston as the Red Sox defeated the Reds 13-6. Boston knocked Cincinnati rookie right-hander Chase Burns out of the game with a seven-run first inning during his second major league start.
— Shea Langeliers hit a three-run homer in his first plate appearance since coming off the injured list, while Lawrence Butler broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple that gave the Athletics a 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
— Andrew Heaney carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, while Spencer Horwitz hit a leadoff homer and finished with three RBIs as the Pirates cruised past the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 to match a season high with their fourth straight victory. Heaney allowed three hits and struck out seven through 6 2/3 innings.
— Gunnar Henderson drove in four runs in extra innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Texas Rangers 10-6 in 11 innings. With the score tied 3-3 in the 10th, Henderson hit a two-run homer and Colton Cowser added a solo shot for a three-run lead. However, Adolis García smashed a three-run home run off the facade of the second deck in the bottom half to tie it 6-6. It was the fourth consecutive extra-inning game for the Rangers to tie a team record set in 2002.
— Alek Thomas went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while Ryne Nelson struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
