The four-year extensions increase the league’s national exposure on CBS Sports Network, raising regular-season basketball broadcasts from a minimum of seven games to at least nine, including two women’s games. The deal also ensures CBS will continue to air the men’s and women’s championship games and select semifinal contests.

CONGRESS
— The NFL and NBA Players Association are backing a Senate bill aimed at overhauling college athletics. The unions wrote to Senate Commerce Committee, expressing support for provisions that guarantee name, image and likeness rights and expand medical and health-care protections for athletes. The NFL also issued its own statement supporting the bipartisan legislation, saying “healthy, stable, and thriving collegiate athletics is essential to the future of American sports.” The proposal, known as the Protect College Sports Act, seeks to regulate athlete compensation, limit players to one free transfer, and establish rules restricting coaches from leaving programs during the season. The bill still faces uncertainty in the Senate, where it will need 60 votes to advance.
NFL
— The family of former NFL linebacker Aldon Smith is donating his brain to the Boston University CTE Center as part of an investigation into his sudden death at age 36. Smith died Saturday in the San Francisco Bay Area, hours after delivering pizzas for a homeless charity. No cause of death has been released. Smith’s brain will be examined for CTE and other trauma related to repeated head injuries. Smith was drafted seventh overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. He finished his early career with 33½ sacks in his first two seasons, the most in NFL history. His career later included stints with the Raiders, Cowboys and the Seahawks, after multiple suspensions and legal issues.
— Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from a Dallas County jail Tuesday after serving a 30-day sentence for violating probation tied to a car crash that injured multiple people on a Texas highway. The 26-year-old Rice was booked May 19 after testing positive for THC, a violation of the terms of his probation. He had surgery shortly before sentencing to address inflammation in his right knee and received medical treatment during his jail term with court approval. The case stems from his involvement in a 2024 multi-vehicle crash.
NHL
— John Tortorella will not return as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights after guiding the team to the Stanley Cup Final on an interim basis. Tortorella was hired March 30 after the team fired Bruce Cassidy with eight games left in the regular season. The Golden Knights went 7-1 down the stretch, then advanced through three rounds of the playoffs before falling to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final.
— The NHL said Tuesday the Stanley Cup Playoffs this spring were the most-watched on record in the U.S. with an average of 1.8 million viewers. That surpassed the previous record of 1.5 million in 1996 and is up 68% over last year. ESPN reported this was the most-watched Cup final since 2019, as Carolina beat Vegas in six games. Some of the increase across sports ratings can be attributed to a change in how Nielsen is counting viewers.
BOXING
— Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing two felony charges in Las Vegas after prosecutors allege he wrote a bad check to purchase a luxury watch. The 49-year-old was charged in April with theft and drawing and passing a check without sufficient funds with intent to defraud. Mayweather wrote a $200,000 check in December 2024 to Las Vegas resale store Gold and Beyond despite insufficient funds in his account. A hearing in the case is scheduled for September.
