NBA
— The New York Knicks have fired coach Tom Thibodeau, just days after their first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years. The Knicks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers with a loss in Game 6 on Saturday night. They then decided to move on from Thibodeau, who led them to the postseason in four of his five seasons in New York. The decision was made by team president Leon Rose with approval from owner Jim Dolan.
— The Indiana Pacers waited 25 years to get back to the NBA Finals. And then they waited a few more hours to actually get to the NBA Finals. The Pacers’ travel plans to the NBA Finals were impacted Tuesday by severe weather. The team’s charter was first diverted to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and then, after refueling there, the plane took a scenic route around another band of weather before finally landing in Oklahoma City about 3 1/2 hours behind schedule.
— The Minnesota Timberwolves are pleased with their core roster after back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances but remain open to change if it makes them better. President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said the team doesn’t feel pressure to make big moves, but won’t shy away from shaking things up if necessary. Top offseason priorities include contract decisions for Julius Randle and Naz Reid, who may opt out and enter free agency. The team is also looking to expand roles for young players like Rob Dillingham, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Jaylen Clark, while holding picks 17 and 31 in the upcoming draft.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— At least 15 former Indiana University men’s basketball players are alleging improper sexual conduct by a former team physician and saying Indiana officials, including late coach Bobby Knight, were aware of the behavior. Since two former Hoosiers sued the university last fall, five ex-athletes are now named in the lawsuit, and 10 additional men are also planning to pursue litigation against Indiana, their attorney. Even though their legal path grew more difficult with the death of Dr. Bradford Bomba last month and the release of an outside investigation that cleared him of sexual misconduct, the men say they are driven to share their stories, in part to protect others from such behavior.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— Minnesota Vikings legend Jim Marshall has died at the age of 87 after a long hospitalization. A cornerstone of the franchise, Marshall played an NFL-record 282 consecutive games during his 20-year career, including 270 with the Vikings. Marshall was a team captain for 14 seasons and part of the iconic “Purple People Eaters” defense, appearing in four Super Bowls.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Willi Castro hit a pair of solo homers as the Minnesota Twins scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to hand the Athletics their eighth straight loss and 19th in their last 20 games, 10-3 on Tuesday night. Trevor Larnach and Castro homered and Byron Buxton added a two-run single in the sixth. Royce Lewis broke an 0-for-32 hitless streak with a bases-loaded two-run double in the seventh. Game three of the four game series in Sacramento is tonight at 9:05 pm.
MLB
— The Colorado Rockies have ended their record-setting streak of 22 consecutive series losses, which dated to last season. A 3-2 victory at Miami on Tuesday night, highlighted by Hunter Goodman’s third home run in two games, gave Colorado two straight victories over the Marlins. That ensures the Rockies will leave town with their first series victory since mid-September. Colorado is a major league-worst 11-50.
— Nick Loftin homered to start a six-run fifth inning, while Bobby Witt Jr. also homered as the Kansas City Royals erased a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7.
— TJ Friedl made a leaping catch in center field for the final out to rob pinch-hitter Jake Bauers of a tying home run as the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 4-2 win that ended the Milwaukee Brewers’ eight-game winning streak.
— Michael Busch hit his ninth homer of the season, drove in three runs and finished a double shy of the cycle to help the Chicago Cubs to a 8-3 victory over the Washington Nationals.
— Lance McCullers Jr. pitched six shutout innings for his first win since 2022, while Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes hit late home runs as the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes allowed one run and three hits in eight innings in the loss.
— Max Muncy homered twice, including a tying shot in the ninth inning, and Freddie Freeman doubled home the winning run in the 10th to lift the Dodgers over the New York Mets 6-5.
— Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a HR in the seventh inning to help the Yankees defeat Cleveland 3-2 in his first game since April 29 due to a strained right oblique.
— Manny Machado had four hits, including a two-run single that tied the score with two outs in the ninth inning, while Jake Cronenworth drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th as San Diego rallied past San Francisco 3-2.
— Drew Rasmussen extended his MLB-leading scoreless streak to 23 innings with five innings of one-hit ball as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-1.
— Shane Smith pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 to end a four-game losing streak. Chicago had lost 11 straight at home vs. Detroit.
— Bryce Harper homered in his first at-bat following a five-game absence, while Trea Turner went deep twice as Philadelphia scored six runs in the first inning on the way to an 8-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
— Automatic runner Zach Neto scored on Taylor Ward’s bases-loaded double play groundout to give the Angels a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings.
— Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll each homered twice as the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a five-game road losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Atlanta Braves.
— Colton Cowser homered in his first game since being activated from the 60-day injured list as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1.
