MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis team finished third at the ESD Conference tournament Tuesday in Yankton, scoring 188 points behind champion Harrisburg and runner-up Brandon Valley. The Kernels were led by Dayton Adams, who captured the Flight 6 singles title with a 10-9 tiebreak win in the championship match. Mitchell added two runner-up finishes in singles play. Simon Wiese placed second at Flight 5, while Dawson Adams finished second in Flight 4. The Kernels now turn their attention to the Class AA state tournament, set for May 21st and 22nd in Rapid City.
— Mitchell Kernels girls golf claimed the Marchand Cup dual on Tuesday at Yankton with a 14.5 to 5.5 victory at Fox Run Golf Course. Mitchell built a big lead early by sweeping the Four Ball matches and winning four of the five Scramble matches in the Ryder Cup-style event. The two teams then split the singles competition five matches apiece. The Kernels will host the Mitchell Invitational on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.
— Mitchell Kernels softball will be at Pierre on Thursday at 4 pm.
— Mitchell baseball will face No. 6 seed Pierre in their region series that starts on Friday at 7:30 pm. The best two out of three series continues on Saturday at Noon, with a potential third game at 2:30 pm.
— Mitchell track and field competes at the ESD conference meet on Saturday in Watertown at 10 am.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s golf sits tied for 11th place after two rounds at the NCAA Stanford Regional in California. The Jackrabbits are 38-over-par through 36 holes and will be paired with Navy and Cal Poly in Wednesday’s final round. Senior McKenzie Mages led SDSU again Tuesday with a one-over 72, putting her at (+1) for the tournament and tied for 20th place individually, just four shots out of the top 10. Host Stanford leads the regional at 26-under-par. The Jackrabbits tee off for the final round at 10:55 am Wednesday.
— South Dakota State baseball closes out the regular season with a four-game series at Omaha beginning Wednesday at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, earning a spot in the Lincoln Regional in Nebraska. The Coyotes, the No. 4 seed in the regional, will open play against host and top seed Nebraska on Friday. The field also includes Grand Canyon and Louisville. The Lincoln Regional runs May 15 through May 17.
HIGH SCHOOL
— Ethan/Parkston swept the team titles at the Southeast South Dakota Conference track and field meet Tuesday in Tyndall. The girls scored 199.5 points while the boys finished with 173. For the E/P girls, Emelia Tapio won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, Piper Reichert took the triple jump, Taziah Hawkins won the 100 hurdles, Kahris Tapio captured the discus and Rachel Klock claimed the long jump. On the boys side, Mark Deckert won the 100, Sean Deckert took the 400, Carson Johnson won the 110 hurdles, Jack Bartscher claimed the high jump and Jayden Digmann won the pole vault. Meanwhile, at the 281 Conference meet in Huron, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s Liz Boschee won four girls titles, including individual victories in the javelin, high jump and 100 hurdles.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Bailey Ober threw a two-hitter for his first career shutout, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 3-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night in their series opener. Byron Buxton stole home and Ryan Jeffers hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who have won three straight games. Ober threw 89 pitches for his third career complete game. He struck out seven, walked none and didn’t allow a hit after the fourth. Ober pitched just the third complete game in the major leagues this year. Game two of the three game series is set for Wednesday at 6:40 pm.

— Victor Wembanyama finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-97 on Tuesday night to take a 3-2 lead in their second-round series. Keldon Johnson had 21 points, De’Aaron Fox added 18 and Stephon Castle had 17 as San Antonio moved a game away from the Western Conference finals. The Spurs can advance to face Oklahoma City with a victory in Game 6 on Friday in Minneapolis. Anthony Edwards, who was limited to eight points in the first half, finished with 20 points for Minnesota. Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels added 17 points apiece.
— Jason Collins, the NBA’s first openly gay player and a 13-year league veteran, has died at the age of 47 after an eight-month battle with brain cancer. His family announced his death Tuesday. Collins had been too ill to attend a recent ceremony where he was honored with the inaugural Bill Walton Global Champion Award, which was accepted on his behalf by his twin brother, former NBA player Jarron Collins. Collins played for six NBA teams over his career, including New Jersey, Atlanta, Boston, Memphis, Minnesota, and Washington. He became a global figure in 2013 when he publicly came out as gay, an announcement that came during his playing career and was widely seen as a milestone for inclusion in professional sports.
— Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, according to the NBA team and his representatives. Clarke was found dead Monday at a home in the Los Angeles area. Authorities say an autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death. No official cause has been released. A seven-year NBA veteran, Clarke was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga.

— The NFL continues to reveal part of its 2026 schedule, highlighting several marquee matchups and an expanded international slate. The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are set to open ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” schedule on Sept. 14, though the league has not yet confirmed the location of the game. One of the biggest international announcements is a Week 10 matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons, which will be played Nov. 8 in Madrid, Spain.
— Craig Morton, the former NFL quarterback who became the first player to start a Super Bowl for two different franchises, has died at the age of 83. The Denver Broncos confirmed Morton’s death, saying he passed away Saturday in California. Morton spent 18 seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos, and is one of only four quarterbacks to start a Super Bowl for two teams. He started Super Bowl V with Dallas and Super Bowl XII with Denver, though both ended in losses. Morton finished his career with nearly 28,000 passing yards and 183 touchdown passes, and was later inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame.

— A Florida judge has ruled that Tiger Woods’ prescription drug records will be turned over to prosecutors as part of his ongoing DUI case stemming from a March arrest. Prosecutors had subpoenaed pharmacy records covering prescriptions filled earlier this year, arguing they are relevant to determining whether Woods was impaired at the time of the crash. Woods has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence following a single-vehicle crash in March.

— Major League Baseball players and owners have begun collective bargaining talks for a new labor agreement, meeting Tuesday in New York more than six months before the current contract expires on Dec. 1. The initial session lasted about two hours and was largely informational, with both sides presenting general views on the state of the sport and its economics. No formal proposals were exchanged. The talks come with early tension already building, as team owners are expected to push for some form of salary cap system, which the players’ union has long opposed. The current five-year labor agreement expires Dec. 1, and MLB has not had a work stoppage that canceled regular-season games since the 1994–95 strike that also led to the cancellation of the World Series.
— Paul Skenes allowed two hits over eight innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Colorado Rockies 3-1. The reigning National League Cy Young winner carried a no-hitter into the seventh while retiring 18 of the first 19 batters he faced. Skenes finished with a season-high 10 strikeouts and lowering his ERA to 1.98.
— Taylor Walls put the Rays ahead with an RBI single in the 10th inning and later scored on Jonathan Aranda’s sacrifice fly as Tampa Bay held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 for its 16th win in 18 games. The Rays have the best record in the American League at 28-13.
— Paul Goldschmidt homered on the first pitch of the game, while Trent Grisham hit a three-run shot as the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2.
— Harrison Bader and Eric Haase homered back-to-back for the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2. Shohei Ohtani homered for the first time since April 26 for the Dodgers.
— Joey Ortiz homered for the first time in nearly 10 months and drove in two runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 6-4 for their fifth straight victory.
— Atlanta’s Grant Holmes combined with three relievers on a one-hitter, while Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski homered as the Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the opener of a three-game series between the National League’s top two teams.
— Kyle Schwarber tied a Phillies record by homering for the fifth consecutive game, hitting his major league-high 17th to lead Philadelphia over the Boston Red Sox 2-1 and give Don Mattingly his 900th managerial win. Philadelphia improved to 11-3 since Mattingly took over as manager on April 28.

— MacKenzie Gore allowed three hits in a career-high eight innings, while Joc Pederson and Ezequiel Duran homered, as the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4. Jake Burger went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, reaching base four times.
— Seattle’s Dominic Canzone hit his first career grand slam and Randy Arozarena went 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 10-2 win over the Houston Astros. It’s Seattle’s ninth straight win over the Astros, which extends a franchise record.
— Rookie JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Athletics 6-4.
— Pinch-hitter Derek Hill homered to break an eighth-inning tie after Chicago wasted a three-run lead as the White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5.
— James Wood hit his 12th home run of the season, while Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile each went deep twice as part of a six-homer night by the Washington Nationals in a 10-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
