MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell senior Maddie Childs finished first at the ESD Conference girls golf tournament in Aberdeen on Tuesday, leading the Kernels to a second-place finish. Childs shot a career-best 3-under-par 69 to win the title, including an eagle on the 15th hole and a strong closing stretch with four-under over her final five holes. Mitchell finished runner-up in the team standings with a score of 318. Mia Larson shot an 82 for eighth place, followed by Londyn Hajek in ninth and Brynlee Sabers tied for 10th. All four Mitchell scorers finished inside the top 10. Aberdeen Central won the team championship with a 301. Mitchell ends the season at the Class AA state tournament next week in Watertown, June 1-2.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State baseball will face No. 13 national seed Nebraska on Friday at 3 p.m. SDSU is 24-31 overall and making just its second NCAA Tournament appearance, the first since 2013. Nebraska is 42-15 and defeated the Jackrabbits 5-4 during the regular season. The regional also includes Ole Miss and Arizona State, with all four teams competing in a double-elimination format. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

— Madison/Chester/Oldham-Ramona-Rutland capped a dominant postseason run Tuesday, winning the Class B state baseball championship with an 8-2 victory over Clark Area in Brookings. The Bulldogs (23-2) leaned on their pitching all tournament long, getting three complete-game performances in three state games and allowing just four total runs in the bracket. In the title game, Braylon Oftedal threw seven innings while allowing five hits and two runs, one earned, as Madison secured its first state championship in 20 years.
— Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake’s season ended on Tuesday, falling 1-0 to Clark Area in the Class B state baseball semifinals in Brookings. The Honkers were held to just two hits, but got a strong pitching performance from Kenyon Kuiper, who struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one unearned run. Platte-Geddes had a chance in the sixth after a Maddux Van Zee double, but couldn’t bring him home. Isaac Leader added the only other hit. Clark scored the game’s lone run on a sixth-inning infield single. The Honkers finished the season at 13-3 with their fifth straight state tournament appearance.

— Brooks Lee hit a bases-loaded double in the 11th inning as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Tuesday night. The Twins improved to 4-1 on their 10-game road trip and have won seven of nine overall. They had lost seven straight against the White Sox. Joe Ryan got a no decision, throwing 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs with nine strikeouts. Game three of the four game series is Wednesday at 6:40 pm.

— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points, while Alex Caruso added 22 points off the bench as the Oklahoma City Thunder moved one win away from a return trip to the NBA Finals by beating the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 on Tuesday night. Stephon Castle scored 24 points for San Antonio, which got 22 points from Julian Champagnie and 20 points from Victor Wembanyama. Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference Finals 3-2 with Game 6 in San Antonio on Thursday.
— Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has been named the NBA’s Coach of the Year after leading Boston to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Mazzulla reiterated his long-standing view that the honor should be a “coaching staff of the year” award, crediting assistants, video staff and players for the team’s success. The 37-year-old becomes the youngest winner of the award in more than 50 years.

— The U.S. Supreme Court is allowing a discrimination lawsuit led by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores against the NFL to move forward, declining Tuesday to intervene in the case. Flores and other Black coaches allege the league’s hiring practices are discriminatory. The NFL had sought to move the dispute into arbitration, but lower courts ruled it could proceed in open court. Justice Brett Kavanaugh dissented from the court’s decision not to take the case. The ruling clears the way for the lawsuit to head toward trial. The 45-year-old Flores in entering his fourth season as the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator.
— Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been arrested and is facing five criminal charges related to a domestic disturbance investigation. Authorities say Jacobs is charged with strangulation and suffocation, battery-domestic abuse, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and intimidation of a victim. Police say they responded to a disturbance complaint Saturday and arrested Jacobs on Tuesday. The Packers say they are aware of the situation and are not commenting further due to the ongoing investigation. The NFL says it has been in contact with the club.
— Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took part in the team’s first voluntary offseason workout Tuesday, just over five months after undergoing surgery to repair ligaments in his left knee. The workout was closed to reporters, but the Kansas City Chiefs posted video showing Mahomes throwing passes while wearing a brace. Head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes is “in a good position” as he works through rehab and could be ready for the start of the season. Mahomes was injured late last season and had surgery the next day. Team officials have said the focus is keeping him on track for Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season.
— The Los Angeles Chargers have signed safety Derwin James Jr. to a three-year, $75 million contract extension, making him the NFL’s highest-paid safety for the second time in his career. The deal, which includes $57 million guaranteed, resets the market at $25 million per year, surpassing the previous record set by Baltimore’s Kyle Hamilton. James, a four-time All-Pro, has been a centerpiece of the Los Angeles Chargers defense since being drafted in 2018.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The NCAA has denied Texas Tech’s request to reinstate quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility after he admitted to wagering on sports, including bets placed during his time as a freshman in college. Texas Tech officials say they will appeal the decision and have also pursued legal action seeking a temporary injunction that would allow Sorsby to play this season. School leaders say Sorsby has completed inpatient treatment for gambling addiction and is receiving ongoing support. They argue the case should be reconsidered in light of his rehab efforts and the broader rise in sports betting among college athletes. The NCAA ruled the quarterback ineligible, keeping in place penalties tied to violations of its sports wagering policies.

— Iowa and Connecticut will open a home-and-home women’s basketball series starting next season. The Hawkeyes will travel to face UConn on Nov. 8, while the return game will be played at Iowa in the 2027-28 season.

— Former Atlanta Braves slugger Bob Horner, a former No. 1 overall draft pick who hit four home runs in a single game, has died at age 68. The Braves announced they were informed of Horner’s death in Texas by his wife. No cause of death was released. Horner starred for the Atlanta Braves for much of the 1980s after being selected first overall in the 1978 draft and debuting in the majors without playing in the minors. He hit 218 career home runs, including a four-homer game in 1986, and was the 1978 National League Rookie of the Year.
— Milwaukee’s Garrett Mitchell hit a three-run homer and Kyle Harrison tossed six shutout innings of four-hit ball to lead the Brewers to a 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Milwaukee has won 14 of its last 18 games and moved 3 ½ games ahead of second-place St. Louis in the NL Central.
— The Yankees hit six home runs and every starter in the lineup had at least two hits for the first time in franchise history, sending New York to a 15-1 rout of Kansas City and its 12th consecutive win over the Royals. Amed Rosario homered twice and Cody Bellinger, Anthony Volpe, Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr. also went deep for the Yankees, who have hit a league-leading 82 home runs this season.
— Pittsburgh rookie Esmerlyn Valdez hit a two-run home run to cap a five-run first inning as the Pirates routed the Cubs 12-1 to extend Chicago’s losing streak to 10 games. The Cubs are just the second team in major league history to have two 10-game winning streaks and one 10-game losing streak in the same season, joining the 2017 Dodgers.
— Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer to cap an eight-run first inning in Texas’ 10-7 win over the Astros, a day after three Houston pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against the Rangers.
— James Wood hit a two-run homer and Keibert Ruiz had a two-run single in the second inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-3.
— Mookie Betts homered twice, driving in five runs, while Kiké Hernández, Andy Pages and Will Smith went deep as the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Colorado Rockies 15-6.
