MITCHELL KERNELS
—Mitchell Kernels girls golf finished second in Brandon on Tuesday at the ESD conference championships. Mitchell shot 343 as a team, 21 shots behind first place Aberdeen Central. Ava Eliason tied for fifth place after shooting an 83, while Maddie Childs tied for seventh overall with an 84. The high school girls golf season ends next week with the Class AA state tournament in Sioux Falls at Prairie Green Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
— Mitchell Kernels softball had its season end on Tuesday with an 13-2, 5 inning loss at Brandon Valley in the Class AA SoDAK 16. The Lynx led 6-0 after the first inning and hit three HR’s on the night. Mitchell ends the season with a 6-11 record.
— Mitchell Kernels track and field competes at the state meet in Sioux Falls starting on Thursday and running through Saturday.

No. 1 Dell Rapids 5, No. 6 Dakota Valley 4 – Cooper Frost with a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning for Dell Rapids to win their fourth state title in five years.

— Tyrese Haliburton had 32 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds without a turnover to lead the Indiana Pacers past the New York Knicks 130-121 on Tuesday night for a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Game 5 is Thursday in New York. Pascal Siakam added 30 points while Haliburton also had four steals in his second career postseason triple-double. The Pacers have not lost consecutive games since March 10.

— Berlin has formally presented its bid to host the Olympics in the same stadium where Jesse Owens starred during the 1936 Games under the Nazis. Berlin sports minister Iris Spranger on Tuesday said the city wants to put on a sustainable Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044, by renovating existing sports venues.

— Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 had its biggest television audience in 17 years, averaging 7 million viewers on Fox. That is the largest audience since 2008 as viewer numbers peaked at 8.4 million for the race’s conclusion.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The commissioner of the Southeastern Conference is hearing an increased amount of interest from his league’s leaders about a previously little-discussed idea of expanding the College Football Playoff from 12 to 16 teams. The future of the playoff will be among the topics discussed among school presidents, athletic directors and coaches in what might be the most consequential of the many conference meetings taking place this spring.

— The WNBA says it cannot substantiate claims that racist fan behavior took place during a game in Indianapolis between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever earlier this month. The league said its investigation included gathering information from fans, team and arena staff, as well as an “audio and video review of the game.” The league said, “we have not substantiated it.”
— Paige Bueckers scored a season-best 21 points in her return to Connecticut to earn her first win as a pro in Dallas’ 109-87 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night. It’s been a week of homecomings for Bueckers as the former UConn star played in the state of Connecticut for the first time since helping the Huskies win the school’s 12th national championship nearly two months ago. Six days earlier she played in her home state of Minnesota.

— Kody Clemens hit his fifth home run of the season as the Minnesota Twins beat Tampa Bay 4-2 to end the Rays’ six-game winning streak. Joe Ryan won his fourth straight decision, allowing one run and five hits in six innings.
— Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 20th home run of the season as the Dodgers defeated Cleveland 9-5. Michael Conforto and Max Muncy also went deep for the Los Angeles.
— Elly De La Cruz hit two long home runs and Brady Singer pitched seven innings against his former team as Cincinnati beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2.
— Michael Busch and Matt Shaw hit run-scoring singles in the 11th inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs past Colorado 4-3 and sending the Rockies to their 21st consecutive series loss. Chicago has won nine of 11 while the Rockies fell to 9-46 and are on pace to finish 27-135.
— Christian Yelich hit a grand slam in the 10th inning for his first career-walk-off homer, giving Milwaukee a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
— Ranger Suárez struck out eight over six shutout innings as the Philadelphia Phillies survived an injury scare to Bryce Harper to beat Atlanta 2-0. Harper left in the first inning after he was hit near the right elbow by a 95-mph fastball from Braves starter Spencer Strider. Harper sustained a bruise and an X-ray was negative
— Pete Alonso and Jared Young each hit a two-run homer in the first inning as the New York Mets beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 for their fourth consecutive comeback victory.
— Wenceel Pérez homered in his first at-bat in his season debut, while Jack Flaherty worked six scoreless innings as Detroit beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1.
— Carlos Rodón pitched seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball in the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Houston’s Jose Altuve’s 40th four-hit game included a pair of home runs as the Astros rolled to an 11-1 win over the Athletics.
— Nolan Arenado hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Baltimore 7-4. The Orioles went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position.
— Bryan Reynolds had four hits, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth, as Pittsburgh overcame a six-run deficit to stun the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-6. The Pirates, who entered the night 0-29 when trailing after seven innings, were down 6-2 before scoring seven times in the eighth.
— San Diego’s Luis Arraez singled in the tying and go-ahead runs against one of his former teams as the Padres rebounded from a six-run deficit for a 8-6 win over Miami. The Marlins took a 6-0 lead after sending 10 batters to the plate in the first against Stephen Kolek, who got through 5 1/3 innings for the win.
— Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run home run, while Cal Raleigh hit a pair of solo homers as the Mariners opened a nine-game homestand with a 9-1 win over Washington.
— Josh Jung’s two-out single scored pinch runner Sam Haggerty in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie as Texas beat Toronto 2-0.
