MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball swept SF Washington at Cadwell Park last night winning 11-1 in six innings and 6-1 in game two. Jacob Ebert was the KORN Player of the Game in game one, earning his first win over the season, allowing one run and four hits over six innings. All nine Mitchell hitters reached base, while catcher Bailor Kristensen was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. In game two, Carter McCormick, Gavin Jones and Parker Mandel limited Washington to one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts. Mitchell has seven of its past eight games and they will be in Yankton for two games on Friday at 6 pm.
— Mitchell girls golf won its second team competition of the week in Yankton on Tuesday, defeating SF Lincoln, SF Jefferson and the Gazelles in a quadrangular at Fox Run Golf Course. The Kernels finished with a team score of 321, finishing 41 strokes ahead of second place Yankton. Maddie Childs and Anna Eliason tied for first with a +6 (78).
— Mitchell boys tennis split a pair of duals on Tuesday in Harrisburg, losing to the Tigers 8-1 while defeating SF Roosevelt 9-0. Mitchell is 14-6 on the season and wraps up the regular season at Watertown on Friday at 11 am.
— Mitchell track and field competes in Yankton on Thursday at Noon.
— Mitchell Kernels softball travels to face Rapid City Stevens on Friday at 2:30 pm CST, followed by two games on Saturday vs. Sturgis at 11:30 am CST and at Spearfish at 3 pm CST.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s McKinnely Mull was named the GPAC Softball Player of the Year on Tuesday. Mull set multiple school records in her final season, including highest slugging percentage, most stolen bases, most RBIs, most hits, and most home runs. As a senior, Mull hit .431 with, 57 RBIs and 18 doubles. Alison Ernsberger was named the Freshman of the Year in the GPAC breaking school records for most strikeouts (175) and most wins (20) in a season. Ernsberger threw 22 complete games, four shutouts, and had a 2.78 ERA over 189 innings. Senior Peyton Bagley was also named to the All-GPAC First Team after hitting .418 on the season with 61 runs scored.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball had five players named to all-GPAC teams on Tuesday, led by sophomore SS Joseph Tharaldson. Tharaldson was named second-team all-conference after hitting .270 with a .349 on-base percentage and 26 RBI’s.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State’s Abby Gentry was named The Summit League Softball Player of the Year on Tuesday, while a total of eight Jackrabbits were recognized as the conference announced its All-Summit League Softball teams. Gentry becomes the fourth Jackrabbit in the previous five seasons to earn The Summit League’s Player of the Year award. The sophomore third baseman had a team-leading and conference best batting average of .464 in league action. She also was the conference leader in RBIs with 24. Her current season batting average of .439 and on-base percentage of .519 would set new school records.
— South Dakota State softball faces the winner between USD and Kansas City in the Summit League Tournament. First pitch is at 1:30 pm in Brookings.
— South Dakota State baseball starts a three-game series at Omaha on Friday at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball will face No. 6 seed Kansas City on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Brookings in the first round of the Summit League Tournament. No. 4 North Dakota faces No. 5 North Dakota State at 1 pm in the first game of the day.

— Golden State star Stephen Curry was sidelined by a strained left hamstring early in the second quarter at Minnesota, as the Warriors were bracing for an extended absence after opening the series by beating the Timberwolves 99-88. Curry will have an MRI on Wednesday. His status is day to day, but coach Steve Kerr acknowledged it’s unlikely he’ll be available to play in Game 2 on Thursday. Buddy Hield led the Warriors with 24 points and 5-of-8 shooting from three, while former Timberwolf Jimmy Butler had 20 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Minnesota was held to 39% shooting and 5-of-29 from three. Anthony Edwards had 23 points and 14 rebounds.
— Tyrese Haliburton made a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining as the Indiana Pacers scored the final eight points in 48 seconds to stun the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers 120-119 on Tuesday night to take a 2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinals series. It’s the first time the Pacers have won the first two games of a playoff series on the road since a 1994 first-round series against Orlando. Donovan Mitchell scored 48 points for Cleveland. Indiana came back down 17 points in the final seconds of the third quarter.

HORSE RACING
— Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not run in the Preakness Stakes, officials announced Tuesday, meaning there won’t be a Triple Crown champion for a seventh consecutive year. Trainer Bill Mott told Preakness officials the plan will be to enter Sovereignty in the Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, on June 7.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Notre Dame and Clemson agreed on Tuesday to a 12-year home-and-home scheduling agreement for football that will pit them against each other annually from 2027 through 2038. Clemson will host the games during odd-numbered years, while Notre Dame will host the games in even-numbered years.
— Scott Frost received a five-year, $22 million contract upon his return to Central Florida and will have it automatically extended a year if the Knights appear in a bowl this season. An executive summary of Frost’s contract was obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday through an open records request. UCF rehired Frost in December after Gus Malzahn left after four seasons to become offensive coordinator at Florida State. Frost led UCF to a 13-0 record in 2017 before leaving for his alma mater in Nebraska. Frost took over at Nebraska in 2018 and went 16-31. He was fired three games into the 2022 season.

— Caitlin Clark’s return to Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a WNBA preseason game last weekend between the Indiana Fever and Brazilian national team averaged 1.3 million viewers on ESPN. The average viewership for Sunday’s game was 13% higher than ESPN’s 2024 regular-season average for the WNBA.

— Pablo López struck out a season-high 11 and Carlos Correa hit an upper-deck two-run homer during a five-run third inning as the Minnesota Twins opened a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles with a 9-1 win. Byron Buxton also hit a three-run homer in the seventh and drove in four runs for the Twins, who have won three straight. Minnesota got Royce Lewis and Willi Castro back from the injured list for the game. Game two between the Twins and Orioles is tonight at 6:40 pm.
—The San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 14-5 in 11 innings after scoring nine times in the top of the 11th. The Cubs forced extra innings after trailing 5-3 in the ninth inning.
— Bobby Witt singled with the bases loaded to cap a rally in the bottom of the ninth as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3.
— Atlanta’s Michael Harris II hit a tying double in the ninth inning and Marcell Ozuna singled home the winning run in the 10th as the Braves rallied past the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 for their third straight victory.
— Jesús Sánchez singled with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, giving the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman homered for L.A.
— The Yankees Austin Wells had five RBIs in a 10-run seventh inning, hitting a tying single and then his first career grand slam as New York rolled to a 12-3 victory over the San Diego Padres Aaron Judge hit his 12th homer of the season in the fourth for the Yankees.
— Jake Bauers hit a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers got all their runs in the first inning in a 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros.
— Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes fell to 0-4 in five career starts against the Cardinals following a 2-1 loss on Tuesday night. Skenes allowed just two runs and three hits over six innings.
— Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos all homered for the Phillies and Zack Wheeler pitched seven innings as Philadelphia beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4.
— Pinch-hitter Cal Raleigh put Seattle ahead with a two-run single in the ninth inning, while Julio Rodríguez went 3 for 4 with a solo home run as the Mariners beat the Athletics 5-3.
— Carlos Santana broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the sixth inning as Cleveland beat the Washington Nationals 9-1 to split a doubleheader. Washington won the first game 10-9.
— Nathan Eovaldi struck out seven over six innings as Texas had 16 hits in their first game since adding Bret Boone as a hitting coach in a 6-1 win over the Red Sox 6-1.
— Logan O’Hoppe drove in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, while Yoán Moncada followed with a three-run homer, as the Angels rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3.
