The next NAIA women’s basketball championship in Sioux City is scheduled for March 19-24, 2026.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State is the No. 1 team in the first rankings released Tuesday by the College Football Playoff selection committee, ahead of fellow unbeatens Indiana at No. 2 and Texas A&M at No. 3. Three SEC teams followed the Aggies, with Alabama at No. 4, Georgia at No. 5 and Ole Miss at No. 6. BYU, Texas Tech, Oregon and Notre Dame round out the top 10. The top ACC team is Virginia at No. 14. Every team in the top 25 came from a Power 4 conference, so the committee designated Memphis as the top team from the Group of 5. The five highest-ranked conference champions will make the 12-team field, but there is a tweak to the format this year as the committee is using a straight seeding model. The top four teams in the final ranking, regardless of conference championship, will receive a first-round bye.

— LSU is promoting Verge Ausberry to athletic director and taking off his interim tag. New school president Wade Rousse made the decision on Tuesday. Ausberry, a former LSU linebacker who has been connected to the university for more than 30 years, was named interim AD last week after Scott Woodward and the school mutually agreed to separate.

NFL
— Sauce Gardner went from last place to first place as the New York Jets sent the two-time All-Pro cornerback to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round draft picks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the Jets in July. He joins the AFC South-leading Colts after spending his first 3 ½ seasons with the Jets.

— The Dallas Cowboys have traded for star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams of the Jets in a move to try to improve one of the NFL’s worst defenses. The Cowboys are giving a 2027 first-round draft pick and a 2026 second-rounder.

MLB
— Boston third baseman Alex Bregman and right-hander Lucas Giolito, along with New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Díaz and the Yankees Cody Bellinger were among the players who turned down player options or exercised opt outs and became free agents. San Diego closer Robert Suarez also turned down his option and went free on the third day of the five-day free agent window. A total of 153 players have become free agents following the end of the World Series and several dozen more potentially can go free through Thursday, depending on whether team, player and mutual options are exercised.

— Catcher Salvador Perez has opted to bypass becoming a free agent, instead agreeing to a two-year contract to remain with the Kansas City Royals. The contract is worth $25 million. The 35-year-old Perez has spent the entirety of his 15-year career with the Royals. Perez played in 155 games last season, hitting 30 home runs, his ninth consecutive full season with at least 20 homers. A nine-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, Perez is the lone remaining player from the Royals’ World Series title in 2015.
