MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf lost to Yankton 14.5 – 9.5 on Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in the annual Marchand Cup. Yankton took four of the six points in the best ball format. The Bucks also had 3.5 points in the two-player scramble and seven of the 12 points in head-to-head individual matches. Mitchell will compete at the Parkston Invitational on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis hosts Spearfish and Pierre on Friday at 10 am at Hitchcock Park.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 3-2-1 on the season, host Huron on Saturday at 1 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer, 1-3-1 on the season, host Huron on Saturday at 11 am.
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball, 3-2 on the season, host Pierre on Saturday at 2:30 pm for its annual Kernel Bowl match.
— Mitchell Kernels football hosts Brookings in the annual Kernel Bowl on Saturday at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 5 pm.
— Mitchell cross country will complete at the Augustana Twilight Meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Friday.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball picked up a five set victory on Tuesday night at Dakota State (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 15-11). Karly VanDerWerff had a match-high 17 kills, Kayleigh Hybertson had 48 assists, while Lizzie Tyler had 25 digs. DWU, 6-4 on the season, host Waldorf on Saturday at 3 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan Junior Kayleigh Hybertson has been named the GPAC’s Setter of the Week following her performance over the weekend in four matches at the College of St. Mary Labor Day Classic. Hybertson totaled 158 assists over the weekend for the Tigers, leading the team to a 2-2 record during the tournament, which saw DWU defeat eighth-ranked IU-Kokomo and Benedictine. She recorded double-doubles in two contests between assists and digs.
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Steven Christion has been named the GPAC’s Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance against Dakota State on Saturday. Christion returned the game’s opening kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown in a 16-14 DWU win.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer won its first match of the season on Tuesday defeating Providence (Mont.) 5-0 with two goals each from Michael Kelly and Lukas Adamhuber. DWU will be at York (Neb.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s golf will be at the Blue River Classic in Lincoln, Neb., at Highlands Golf Course on Wednesday and Thursday.
— Dakota Wesleyan football will be at Dordt on Saturday at 1 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State running back Julius Loughridge was named the first Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week of the 2025 season. In his Jackrabbit debut on Saturday against Sacramento State, Loughridge racked up 159 rushing yards on 22 carries in a 20-3 home victory. Six of the Fordham transfer’s carries went for 10-plus yards, including runs of 37 in the second quarter and 32 yards in the fourth quarter. As a team, SDSU ran for 240 yards en route to its 30th consecutive home victory and a win in Dan Jackson’s first game as head coach.
— South Dakota State volleyball, 1-1 on the season, host the SDSU Invitational this week as they take on Ole Miss on Friday and Wyoming on Sunday.
— South Dakota State football will be at No. 3 Montana State on Saturday at 7 pm. The pregame show on KORN News Radio begins at 5 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 3-1-2 on the season, return home vs. Oregon State on Sunday at 1 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— Reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, Kamryn Farris of USD, picked up the conference’s first weekly Summit League Defensive Peak Player of the Week honor on Tuesday. It’s Farris’ fourth weekly honor of her career. Farris led the Coyotes in digs (56), digs per set (4.67) and aces (8) across the three matches this weekend in Bozeman, Montana.
— USD volleyball competes at the UConn Tournament in Storrs, Connecticut this week with matches against UConn on Thursday, Ball State on Friday and Colgate on Saturday.
— USD football plays at Lamar on Saturday at 6 pm following a 55-7 season opening loss to Iowa State.
— USD women’s soccer, 3-1-2 on the season, host Central Michigan on Sunday at 11 am.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Andrew Benintendi went 4 for 5 with two homers and five RBIs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 12-3. Kyle Teel and Lenyn Sosa also homered and Brooks Baldwin had three hits for the White Sox, who have won three in a row. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson struck out seven and gave up two earned run in five innings. Game three of the four game series is tonight at 6:40 pm from Target Field.
MLB
— Tommy Pham and Jared Triolo each drove in two runs as the Pirates spoiled a big night by Shohei Ohtani to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-7. Ohtani hit his 100th home run with the Dodgers and had a pair of doubles.
— Alex Bregman legged out a hard chopper down the third-base line for an infield single with two outs in the eighth inning to drive in the go-ahead run as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 11-7. Jarren Duran and Trevor Story followed with RBI doubles for Boston’s second four-run inning of the game.
— Pete Alonso homered twice and Juan Soto went deep again as the New York Mets beat the Detroit Tigers 12-5.
— Trent Grisham hit his second grand slam in five days and Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered twice to lead the New York Yankees to a 7-1 win over the Houston Astros. New York stayed 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Blue Jays in the AL East.
— George Springer went 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs, while Bo Bichette hit a three-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays held on for a 12-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
— Emmanuel Rivera tied his career high with four RBIs on a pair of two-out singles as the Baltimore Orioles beat the San Diego 6-2. San Diego, which has lost three in a row and seven of nine, remained 2 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
— Ketel Marte hit a three-run homer that snapped a seventh-inning tie as the Arizona Diamondbacks ended the Texas Rangers’ six-game win streak with a 5-3 victory.
— Rafael Devers hit his 30th home run in the first inning of the Giants’ 7-4 win over the Rockies. San Francisco has won nine of 10.
— Junior Caminero hit his 40th homer and drove in four runs to reach 100 RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat Cal Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners 6-5. Raleigh hit his 51st homer, extending his major league record for home runs by a catcher.
— Kyle Tucker hit a three-run homer and added a single as the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3.
— Mitch Farris pitched five innings to win his major league debut and Jo Adell hit a two-run homer that helped the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-1.
— Iván Herrera hit a go-ahead two-run home run and Miles Mikolas pitched six innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Athletics 2-1.
— James Wood hit a two-run home run as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 5-2.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State is back at No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll ahead of No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 LSU, which was joined this week by No. 5 Miami in the top five. Florida State is back in the poll for the first time in a year at No. 14 and Alabama plummeted to its lowest ranking in 17 seasons at No. 21. The defending national champion Buckeyes received 55 of 66 first-place votes. They are No. 1 in a regular-season poll for the first time since 2015. Preseason No. 1 Texas dropped to seventh.
— Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson and former Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager are among 10 plaintiffs suing the NCAA over its redshirt rule that puts restrictions on the five years the athletes have to practice, play and graduate from college. The class action lawsuit alleges the NCAA violates U.S. antitrust laws with how its redshirt rule covers playing time for athletes during five seasons of eligibility. The lawsuit includes seven other named plaintiffs and potentially thousands of current and former NCAA football, baseball and tennis players.
TENNIS
— Venus Williams’ run at the U.S. Open is over. Williams and partner Leylah Fernandez were eliminated in the quarterfinals of women’s doubles on Tuesday by the top-seeded duo of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-2. Williams had been out of tennis for 16 months before returning in Washington in July. She lost in the first round of mixed doubles and singles at the U.S. Open and then she and Fernandez got a wild-card entry into the doubles field. Meanwhile, Townsend and Siniakova are seeking their third Grand Slam title as a pair.
MLB
— Mike Trout was scratched from the Los Angeles Angels’ starting lineup against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday because of a skin infection. The three-time AL MVP is considered day-to-day. Trout was originally penciled in as the designated hitter but was removed from the lineup less than an hour before first pitch. Trout is batting .231 with 20 home runs and 54 RBIs. He’s two homers shy of 400 for his career.
NASCAR
— Two NASCAR teams, including one owned by Michael Jordan, have argued in federal court for a preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations. This comes amid their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. The teams have responded to NASCAR’s decision not to redistribute charters while the case proceeds. The teams won charter status for this season, but it was overturned. NASCAR wants the money back from when they were chartered.
