The USDA says dairy farmers can expect a program payment for at least three months of this year if they sign up for the Dairy Margin Protection Program by the end of Friday.
USDA Under Secretary Bill Northey tells Brownfield more than 10,000 dairy farmers have signed up so far at local Farm Service Agency offices. “This is going to be a big help. We know that in many cases this will not make folks profitable that are unprofitable, but it’s certainly a big help to cover some of those loses.”
USDA just set the April national average margin at $6.62, which guarantees payments for producers enrolled at the $8, $7.50 and $7 coverage levels.
