Ethanol industry is struggling

Ethanol producers are facing a period of prolonged breakeven or negative margins the likes of which they haven’t seen in many years.

Iowa Renewable Fuels Association president Bill Howell, general manager of the POET ethanol plant at Coon Rapids, Iowa, says the RFS waivers granted to oil refiners by the EPA are still impacting the industry.

“You’re talking over two billion gallons worth of waivers, and that has a huge impact on supply and demand,” Howell says.
