Heavy rains have wreaked havoc on planting and crop emergence. Mike Schultz, an agronomist with NK Seeds based in Minnesota, says newly planted corn and soybeans are trying to come through soil that’s been pounded by rain. “It deteriorated any sort of soil aggregates that were loose on the top of the soil. And this sun and heat, while it has been welcomed by the crops that have been put in the ground and emerged, it is causing some crusting issues out there.” He says growers should pay a visit to fields planted in the last couple of weeks.
