Lawsuit seeks to stop new Missouri meat labeling law

The first state labeling law to prevent non-meat products from being labeled as meat is being challenged. The Tofurkey company, the ACLU and two other groups have filed suit against the Cole County prosecuting attorney on behalf of all Missouri prosecutors who would try cases that violate the new Missouri law.

Mike Deering, executive vice president of Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, calls the lawsuit ‘unfortunate and laughable, and tells Brownfield Ag News, “All we did (in the bill) was say that you cannot misrepresent a product as meat that does not meet the definition (of meat) currently on the books.”

Amanda Howell, staff attorney with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, a group that supports the lawsuit.
