Mixed views on China’s need for soybean imports

There are conflicting views about whether China can reduce soybean imports.

A report from Chinese state media Economic Daily says China can cut soybean imports by more than ten million tons by using livestock feed with less protein, using more rapeseed, cotton seeds, sunflower seeds and palm kernels.  China’s Ministry of Agriculture also says soybean acreage would increase by more than 660-thousand hectares this year, and Chinese university officials say they have four million hectares of idle land to expand production.
