Farm subsidies were under attack during the House’s floor debate of the 2018 Farm Bill on Thursday.
An amendment proposed by Republican Representative Tom McClintock of California would phase out all agricultural subsidies. “At the end of this 12-year process, we’ll have a more efficiently functioning agricultural market that is accurately responding to the needs of consumers,” he says. “Rather than the whims of government bureaucrats.”
Ranking Member Collin Peterson says a similar program was proposed in 1996 and it didn’t work then.
