USDA veterinarian Dr. Jack Shere says African Swine Fever is not significantly contagious on its own, but the disease is spreading rapidly because it is an excellent hitchhiker.
“If there is contact with and animal that has the virus, or people move food or farm equipment around from infected areas to non-infected areas they can spread it. It is carried on clothes and carried by people on their boots.”
Shere says tight biosecurity measures and quick response to
reported cases is crucial, which is why the USDA and animal health departments
in several states have been holding functional drills to clock and improve response
times.
