16-Year-Old Dies in Crash in Western South Dakota

An accident occurred resulting in the death of a teenager and leaving another with life-threatening injuries in western South Dakota.

The incident involved a parked semi-truck on the shoulder of I-90 near Summerset. When the semi attempted to merge back onto the interstate, it was rear-ended by a 2023 Kia Sportage, causing the car to become lodged underneath the trailer of the semi.

The 16-year-old driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 17-year-old passenger sustained serious life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi, a 54-year-old man, was uninjured as he was wearing a seatbelt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, and the names of those involved have not been disclosed pending notification of their families.
