STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – TUESDAY
— Clark rallied with a five-run fifth inning to upset South Central League champion Tabor, 10-3, Tuesday night in the second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Cadwell Park. The Traders finished with 12 hits and took advantage of four Tabor errors. Hudson Fuller earned the win, allowing one earned run and five hits in eight innings.
— The Dell Rapids Mudcats advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over the Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks Tuesday night. Dell Rapids trailed 1-0 before taking the lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Ty Hoglund added a two-run triple in the sixth, and the Mudcats scored three more runs in the seventh. J.D. Prorok, a Madison Legion pickup player, allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Austin Henry finished with 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Thursday and Friday at Tomar Park in Sioux Falls. Action starts on Thursday at 11:30 am.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts the season on Friday by hosting Huron. The girls match will be at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field, followed by the boys match at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball opens its season Friday at the Our Lady of the Lake Invite in San Antonio, Texas. The Tigers face Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and Montana Western at 5 p.m. Friday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer has been picked to finish second in the Summit League preseason coaches’ poll. The Jackrabbits received two first-place votes and 44 points, behind Oral Roberts with 48 points and six first-place votes. SDSU’s Mallorie Benhart and Mia Bosch were named players to watch. Benhart was the 2025 Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year, while Bosch led the league with nine assists last season. SDSU women’s soccer begins its season by hosting Manitoba on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball will play an exhibition match at Iowa State on Friday at 4 pm. The Jackrabbits start the season at the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, California, on Friday, August 28th.

— USD women’s soccer season begins on Thursday at Northern Iowa at 4 pm. The Coyotes will be at Nebraska on Sunday at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Pete Alonso, Gunnar Henderson and Christian Encarnacion-Strand each had three hits and a home run as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-2. Brandon Young (9-3) gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits in six innings. Bailey Ober gave up five runs on eight hits over six innings and took his first loss since May 30. The Twins remain 1 ½ games behind Texas for the final AL Wild Card spot. The final game of the three-game series is set for Wednesday afternoon at 12:40 pm.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback, beating out J.J. McCarthy in a competition that lasted through training camp. Coach Kevin O’Connell made the announcement Tuesday, giving Murray the rest of camp to work exclusively with the first-team offense ahead of the Sept. 13 season opener.

— LeBron James will make his Philadelphia 76ers debut against the defending NBA champion New York Knicks on opening night, Oct. 20, at Madison Square Garden. The game will be part of a tripleheader as the Knicks raise a championship banner celebrating their first NBA title since 1973. The NBA also announced its five Christmas Day games, including Philadelphia visiting the Los Angeles Lakers, James’ former team. Other Christmas matchups include San Antonio at New York, Miami at Boston, Oklahoma City at Minnesota and Denver at Golden State. The full 2026-27 NBA schedule will be released Thursday.

— CBS Sports president David Berson says there is no timeline for a decision on Tony Romo’s future with the network. Romo, CBS’ lead NFL analyst, remains on indefinite leave following his July arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence. Berson says CBS is still assessing the situation and wants the focus of its NFL broadcasts to remain on the games rather than Romo’s legal situation. J.J. Watt will replace Romo on CBS’ top NFL broadcast team alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz. Their first game together will be Sept. 13, when the Minnesota Vikings host the Green Bay Packers. Romo has been CBS’ lead NFL analyst since 2017.

— A Texas judge has upheld Little League Baseball’s decision to remove Tulsa from the Southwest Region tournament, keeping the team out of Tuesday night’s championship game and ending its bid for a spot in the Little League World Series. Little League ruled Monday that a Tulsa player was ineligible because of incorrect birth information entered for a sibling. A temporary restraining order briefly allowed Tulsa to play, but Judge Ryan Luna reinstated the order Tuesday afternoon. Little League officials said the ruling supports its commitment to fair competition and emphasized that the adults responsible for the program must ensure rules are followed.
WNBA
— Kelsey Mitchell scored 28 points and Caitlin Clark added 22 points and 10 assists as the Indiana Fever beat the New York Liberty 106-92 Tuesday night. Mitchell scored 20 points in the first half as Indiana built a 64-46 halftime lead. The Fever shot 59% from the field and made 16 of 25 3-pointers. Aliyah Boston added 19 points and seven rebounds, while Sophie Cunningham scored 12 points and also made four 3-pointers. The Fever have won seven of their last nine games. New York was led by Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu with 19 points apiece. Indiana improved to 21-12 on the season, while New York falls to 20-14.

— The Los Angeles Angels have fired pitching coach Mike Maddux and two assistants with 43 games remaining in the season. Interim general manager John Mozeliak says the Angels were not making enough use of the technology and analytics available to their pitchers. The bullpen coach and assistant pitching coach were also dismissed. The Angels entered Tuesday night having Major League Baseball’s worst record at 45-74 and are headed toward their 11th consecutive losing season and 12th straight year without a playoff appearance. Maddux joined the Angels last offseason after helping the Texas Rangers win the 2023 World Series and oversaw a pitching staff with a 4.51 ERA.
— Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson’s major league-record errorless streak at the position is over at 112 games after he made an errant throw in the eighth inning against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. It was Wilson’s first error since July 6, 2025. The 24-year-old Wilson on Sunday surpassed Mike Bordick’s shortstop errorless record of 110 games.

— Elly De La Cruz drove in automatic runner Matt McLain with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-4. The Reds rallied from three runs down in the eighth inning. The White Sox drew just over 38,000 fans, their ninth sellout, for a unique giveaway: team-branded pope-style hats in honor of Pope Leo XIV, a lifelong White Sox fan.
— Kevin McGonigle drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-4. Detroit won their first game against Cleveland after losing six straight to the Guardians. The Tigers are now just 2 ½ games behind the White Sox for first place in the AL Central and ½ game behind Texas for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman and Seiya Suzuki homered as the Chicago Cubs rallied from an early deficit to beat the Washington Nationals 8-6. The Cubs were 34-34 on June 10 but have gone 36-16 since and they have a commanding lead in the NL wild-card race.
— Max Muncy singled in Shohei Ohtani in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Kansas City Royals 5-4. The Dodgers tied it 4-4 on Mookie Betts’ RBI single in the eighth.
— Taylor Walls homered from both sides of the plate for the second time in his career, while Nick Martinez threw a complete game as the Tampa Bay Rays won their eighth straight game, 12-4 over the Athletics. Martinez allowed four runs on eight hits while throwing 101 pitches for his second career complete game.
— Luis Rengifo hit a grand slam against the Brewers seven weeks after they released him, while Fernando Tatis Jr. also went deep as the San Diego Padres beat Milwaukee 11-2.
— Kyle Karros hit a two-run homer as the Colorado Rockies rallied for a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona fell to 64-57 as they are currently in a three-way tie with Philadelphia and San Diego for the final two wild-card spots in the NL.
— Zach Neto had an RBI single and scored during the Angels’ three-run third inning as Los Angeles picked up a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.
— Martín Pérez pitched six scoreless innings, while Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson homered as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 4-0. Pérez stretched his scoreless innings streak to 18.
— Ernie Clement drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3. Boston lost their fourth straight after winning 27 out of 30.
— Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham each hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to send the New York Yankees past the Seattle Mariners 4-1.
— Andre Pallante gave up four hits over six shutout innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.
— Bryce Eldridge homered, while fellow rookie Carson Whisenhunt pitched 5 2/3 innings after working out of two early bases-loaded jams as the San Francisco Giants beat the Houston Astros 4-1.
