Closure of South Dakota State’s Dairy Research Facility Due to Unachievable Renovation Costs

South Dakota State University officials have announced the closure of the Dairy Research and Training Facility by June due to updated renovation cost estimates exceeding $28 million.

The fundraising goal for the renovations was deemed unachievable.

While the facility’s closure will not impact other aspects of SDSU’s dairy science program, including the dairy bar, a $7.5 million investment approved in 2021 will go unused as renovation plans are halted.

The university plans to continue offering high-quality degree programs in dairy production, manufacturing, and food science, collaborating with industry partners for student experiential learning in modern facilities.
