Generous Surprise: South African Gold Coin Found in a Mitchell Salvation Army Kettle

Salvation Army Lieutenant Rodney Morin, while counting donations in Mitchell, discovered a South African Krugerrand coin inside one of the kettles.

Initially mistaken for a U.S. one-dollar coin, the Krugerrand is made of high-purity gold and valued over $2,000.

The mysterious donor remains anonymous, as no one, including the bell ringer, recalls seeing the coin being placed.

Lt. Morin expresses gratitude for the generous gift, highlighting the positive impact of Salvation Army programs in the community and expressing a desire to meet the anonymous donor to learn about their story and how the organization has impacted them.

The unexpected donation has made Lt. Morin’s first Christmas in Mitchell, South Dakota, a memorable one.
