MITCHELL, S.D. — A multi-day rainfall event brought significant precipitation to much of southeastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa, with several communities reporting more than 4 inches of rain.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls said rainfall totals collected from Saturday morning through Tuesday afternoon showed a wide swath of the region receiving substantial rain.
Wagner recorded the highest total in the area at 6.30 inches, followed by Sibley, Iowa, with 5.39 inches and Alexandria with 5.33 inches.
Other significant totals included 4.98 inches at Tyndall, 4.85 inches at Dell Rapids, 4.51 inches at Terril, Iowa, and 4.18 inches at Flandreau.
Canton recorded 3.06 inches, while Storm Lake, Iowa, received 3.13 inches.
Official airport measurements were considerably lower in some locations, including 0.83 inches at Sioux Falls Regional Airport, 0.80 inches at Huron Regional Airport, 0.55 inches at Sioux City, 0.38 inches at Chamberlain and 0.34 inches at Brookings.
The National Weather Service noted that backyard rainfall totals can vary from estimates and official measurements. The rainfall brought widespread moisture to an area that had been experiencing varying precipitation totals throughout the summer.
