An inmate at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls assaulted a female Aramark employee in the kitchen’s meat cooler at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
A correctional officer intervened, finding the inmate in a chokehold on the employee.
The victim was taken to a hospital, and the incident is under investigation by the Department of Corrections, with assistance from the DCI.
The Jameson Annex is on lockdown, and concerns about staff safety have been raised.
Inmate visits were canceled, and the on-call senior staff member had not arrived by 10:00 a.m.
