MITCHELL, S.D. — The Mitchell Police Department is encouraging parents and guardians to talk with their children about online safety as part of Internet Safety Month in June.
The department is partnering with the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to share resources and tips aimed at helping families navigate online risks, particularly those associated with social media, online gaming and digital communication.
In a recent public awareness campaign, police highlighted the potential dangers children may encounter while playing online video games, including interactions with strangers, scams, inappropriate content and other online threats.
Officials urged parents to stay informed about the games their children play, review privacy and chat settings, discuss safe online behavior and encourage children to report any interactions that make them uncomfortable.
“The best online safety tool is ongoing communication,” the department said in its message to parents. Officials recommend regularly asking children about their favorite games and the people they interact with online.
Throughout June, the department plans to share additional online safety information and educational resources through its social media channels.
Police said conversations between parents and children remain one of the most effective ways to help young people recognize risks and make safe decisions while using the internet.
The campaign is part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies across South Dakota to raise awareness about internet safety and promote responsible online behavior among children and families.
