MITCHELL, S.D. — Mitchell Parks and Recreation has issued a public health warning for Lake Mitchell after laboratory testing detected a high concentration of microcystin, a toxin produced by blue-green algae, in the water.
The warning took effect Friday, July 31, and officials are advising the public to avoid all contact with lake water until further notice.
Microcystin can pose serious health risks to people and animals. Exposure through skin contact may cause rashes and irritation, while inhaling water droplets can lead to respiratory symptoms. Swallowing contaminated water can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and, in severe cases, liver damage.
Officials urge residents and visitors to stay out of the water and keep pets away from the lake while the warning remains in effect. Additional testing will determine when conditions are safe for recreational use.
