State Senator Brent Hoffman is set to address South Dakota’s alarming DUI statistics in the upcoming legislative session.
Following reports of the state having the highest per capita DUI rates and fatalities during holidays, Hoffman aims to amend DUI sentencing rules.
He plans to introduce a bill in January that focuses on changing the state’s “clock” on past DUI offenses, which currently resets after ten years.
Hoffman emphasizes the need for stricter measures to deter repeat offenders and increase accountability, as many individuals with multiple DUIs often escape proper consequences.
While not guaranteed to become law, Hoffman highlights widespread support from various stakeholders, including the Attorney General, law enforcement, sheriffs, and concerned citizens across the state.
