Two teenage girls were involved in a minor car crash after failing to stop at a stop sign in Watertown, South Dakota on Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:22 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 81 and 5th Avenue Southeast. A 16-year-old girl driving a 1997 Dodge Ram was traveling northbound on Highway 81 when she was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 15-year-old girl who was traveling westbound on 5th Avenue Southeast.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded into the intersection, colliding with the Dodge Ram. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to swerve off the road and crash into a house on the west side of Highway 81.
The two teenage girls were both evaluated by Watertown Fire Rescue for minor injuries. They were both wearing seatbelts and airbags deployed in both vehicles, which likely helped to prevent more serious injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was issued a citation for failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver of the Dodge Ram was issued a citation for driving without a valid driver’s license.
The crash remains under investigation by the Watertown Police Department.
