Waubay Woman Sentenced to Prison for Embezzling $200,000 from Tribal Organization

A federal judge has sentenced Kayline Joy LaBelle of Waubay to five years in prison for embezzling over $200,000 from the Buffalo Lake District of the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe, where she served as treasurer between 2018 and 2022.

LaBelle pleaded guilty to embezzlement and theft charges, and in addition to her prison term, she is required to pay restitution and serve three years of supervised release.

Four accomplices were charged in connection with the case, with two having pleaded guilty and two awaiting trial.
