The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has released the names of those involved in a fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash on Wednesday night, July 15th in Day County.
Preliminary crash information indicates 51 year old Timothy Allen Smith from Rochester, Minnesota and 53 year old Kimberly McDeid from Bath, South Dakota were driving westbound on 130th Street in a 2026 Kia earlier in the evening when they struck a deer. They returned in a second vehicle, a 1998 Honda CR-V, and parked in the westbound lane facing east. They exited the Honda, leaving the headlights on. At the same time, 21 year old Simon Lee Pies from Summit, the driver of a 2021 International MV607 commercial truck, was driving westbound on 130th Street when he approached the parked Honda. Pies tried to avoid the vehicle and struck Smith, who was standing in the road, before striking the Honda. Smith sustained fatal injuries. Pies, and 19 year old passenger Rylie Marie Mitchell from Summit, and McDeid were not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation which is ongoing.
