Mayor Jordan Hanson says the City of Mitchell has recovered from a cyber breach on August 6th.
He says the city shut down its system as soon as the issue was detected. Hanson says very few people were impacted and letters were sent out to the affected parties. “But if you haven’t received a letter, you have nothing to worry about,” said Hanson. “And if you have received a letter, it’ll tell you what you can do and how they’re going to help out going forward.”
He says the City of Mitchell employs a “breach council” and a team of forensic specialists. “The city has cybersecurity insurance, so when something happens, we call them and these guys are professionals,” Mayor Hanson said. “That’s all they do all day every day. And they just sent a team in to just handle everything as far as what happened, why it happened, who was affected, how we can change things going forward, and then how to get restored.”
Hanson says the city has made a few minor changes to improve the current system which he calls “robust.”
