Davison County Commissioners take another step toward a new county jail

Davison County Commissioners are taking a step forward in building a new county jail. The group voted unanimously to hire Tegra to assist in the project. Chairman Randy Reider says on the advice of Sheriff Steve Harr and others, a new facility is the best way to go.

Commissioner Chris Nebelsick agreed. “But I do think that when we build the new one, we need to make sure that the designers have expansion in mind,” said Nebelsick.

Tegra’s services cover a wide range of overall project components. Their fee is around $60,000.

Reider says a site location has yet to be determined. “The sheriff and the chief of police would like to be along the bypass, but site location is part of the process and another reason why we need to move forward,” Reider said.

He says a potential location is at the northeast corner of the intersection of the highway 37 bypass and West Eighth Avenue. “So out by the middle school there, that’s a 26 acre piece already owned by the city,” said Reider.

He says it’s still too early in the planning process regarding what to do with the current jail once a new facility is completed.
