DWU Campus Ministry aiding flood victims

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Campus Ministry team is leading an effort to collect supplies to aid flood victims on the Pine Ridge Reservation and throughout Nebraska.

Campus Ministry’s supply drive includes cleaning supplies and hygiene items which will be donated to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for distribution. Donations can be dropped off at the Campus Ministry office within the Rollins Campus Center at DWU by Friday, April 12, and a list of items is below.

“I think we can all feel inspired by the literal truckloads of hay that other states have hauled to Nebraska to help, as well as the supply drives we’ve seen on social media and in our churches,” said Denise Van Meter, DWU associate campus pastor. “Our students, some of whom are from the affected areas of March’s ‘bomb cyclone,’ want to help and are looking for ways to actively give. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has a system in place to help distribute goods – so the students set out to collect them.”

People can donate individual items – there is a board in the Sherman Center Lobby with a list of items still needed – or they can also donate a full kit. Monetary donations can be accepted at the UMCOR website (www.umcmission.org/umcor) or donations by check can also be delivered to the Campus Ministry office on campus, Memo: Flood Relief, to be used toward incomplete kits.  The team’s goal is eight kits and as of April 4, they are almost halfway there.
