Early morning fire destroys garage

An early morning fire leveled a garage in the alley behind 936 East Fourth Avenue in Mitchell. Firefighters arrived shortly after 2:30 and found the structure fully involved and controlled the blaze.

Mitchell Fire Marshal Shannon Sandoval says investigators are looking for fire’s the cause and origin. “We’re trying to first identify where the fire might have started and kind of branch out from there,” said Sandoval. “If we can kind of figure out, pin-point the area then we can maybe kind of start to eliminate the things that may have caused the fire.”

Fire scene is closed while the investigation continues.

He says the State Fire Marshal’s office and Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting.

The fire damaged a fence and some trees across the alley but no other structures were involved. No one was hurt.

The 400 block of North Gamble between East Fourth and East Fifth Avenues is closed until the investigation is done.
