67 years ago a Corn Palace Festival tradition began. “In 1959, the Woolworth’s Five and Dime expanded and took over more of the building and so then for Corn Palace Week, their grand opening was that they would have caramel apples on a stick for ten cents,” said Karen Pooley of Mitchell’s Carnegie Resource Center.
Pooley says once again the famous Woolworth’s Caramel Apples are available starting today through Sunday at the Pepsi Cola Theater at the corner of 7th and Main. It’s a fundraiser for the Carnegie Resource Center. “I just want them to know that in purchasing apples, they will be helping keep Mitchell’s history because it all goes to the Carnegie,” she said.
Pooley pointed out since the Mitchell Area Historical Society acquired the former Carnegie Library, it’s spent more than $600,000 for a variety of repairs and upgrades.
Caramel apples are $6 each.
