The Hughes County Commission is considering how to move forward regarding Senate Bill 96. The measure would give a half-cent sales tax option to counties for the reduction in property taxes on owner-occupied homes. South Dakota Department of Revenue Secretary Michael Houdyshell says some counties have moved forward enacting the tax.
“I was down in Kennebec talking to the Lyman County Commissioners,” said Houdyshell. “I was on a phone call with Meade County. Meade County actually had their second reading last Tuesday, and so they were the first county to actually pass the ordinance.”
Houdyshell says Meade County is ready to start imposing the county sales tax come January 1st nnless it’s referred to a public vote.
He says while owner-occupied property gets the lion-share of any reduction all property could see a credit.
Based on Department of Revenue estimates a 325-thousand dollar Hughes County home could see a 900 dollar reduction in property taxes, if the half-cent sales tax is enacted.
