Lightning strike damages Mitchell church

The first thunderstorm of the season heavily damaged Mitchell’s First Lutheran Church Friday evening. A lightning bolt apparently struck the highest point of the steeple raining blocks and other debris to the ground. Church member Janet Drewes was at her home on Iowa Street when the boom rattled her residence. “I got a Facebook notice from our minister that said it got hit,” said Drewes.

She says a beam in the balcony inside the church was split. “I consider it a catastrophe because it’s like…this is my second home,” Drewes said.

Remains of the cross lay outside the door on top of the steps.

The damaged area facing Duff Street is closed off. One of the fallen pieces of block left a hole in the lawn several inches deep. No one was hurt. Drewes says Sunday services will go on as planned in the adjacent worship center.
