Lower Brule man sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting a federal officer

A 35 year old man from Lower Brule is in a federal prison following his conviction for Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer.

Cody Crazy Bull was sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

The U-S Attorney’s Office reported on May 12, 2025, in Lower Brule, Federal officers with the Bureau of Indian Affairs observed Crazy Bull in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in a parking lot.  Aware that Crazy Bull had an active tribal arrest warrant, the officers attempted to place him under arrest.  As an officer was standing in an open door of the vehicle, Crazy Bull put the vehicle in reverse and backed up quickly, striking the officer with the vehicle door.  The officer then jumped into the moving vehicle to avoid being run over and gave repeated commands for Crazy Bull to stop the vehicle.  Crazy Bull eventually stopped the vehicle and fled on foot until he was apprehended a short time later hiding in a mechanical closet of a nearby building.

A federal grand jury indicted Crazy Bull in July, 2025. He pled guilty on April 9, 2026 and subsequently sentenced on July 6th.
