Mitchell Exchange Club announces Youth of the Year

The Mitchell Exchange Club announced its annual “Youth of the Year” recipient during Monday’s meeting. The club names a youth of the month during the school year running from September through May.

Mitchell High School history teacher Steve Morgan is a Youth of the Year Committee member. “How do you choose a winner among winners,” asked Morgan. “These are top students, and I want to tell you that it was so tough deciding that youth of the year.”

Each student must be nominated by two teachers, and filling out an application for youth of the month. Morgan called them “the cream of the crop.”

This year’s Youth of the Year is Teresa Schroeder, October’s Youth of the Month. Schroeder is planning to attend Augustana University. “Overall, I believe that contributing to society is not a temporary goal, but a lifelong commitment,” she read from her essay. “The experiences I’ve had so far are only the beginning. I’m determined to use the empathy, responsibility, and leadership I have developed through serving my community to make a meaningful difference wherever I go.”
