Parole violators overwhelming Minnehaha County Jail

Parolees are discovering the rules have changed…they’re being pulled back to prison for parole violations and for committing crimes after being released on parole.

They’re held in county jails on their way back to prison…and that has created an emergency for the Minnehaha County jail.

Sheriff Mike Milstead says parolee numbers in his jail jumped from 8 to 160 in just a few weeks. “That caused us last week to open up prematurely in a, I would call an emergency basis, UC3, which is the next floor of the jail that was set up for eventual expansion based on Minneapolis County’s needs,” said Milstead. “We’re expanding into that area right now because of DOC needs,” he continued

Sheriff Milstead says his staff is working with the Governor’s office and the Department of Corrections to find a solution.
