Special Saturday Hours Offered for CDL Holders Ahead of August 28 Deadline

The South Dakota Driver Licensing Program will offer special Saturday hours to help Commercial Driver License holders with a K restriction update their license before the August 28 deadline.

To support drivers ahead of this final compliance month, select Driver Exam Stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on designated Saturdays.

Special Saturday Locations:

Aberdeen: August 8, 15, 22

Brookings: August 8, 15, 22

Huron: August 8, 15, 22

Pierre: August 8, 15, 22

Rapid City: August 8, 15, 22

Sioux Falls One-Stop: August 8, 15, 22

Watertown: August 8, 22

The K restriction limits CDL operation to intrastate-only driving. We are aligning license requirements with federal regulations, meaning affected CDL holders must update their license status and maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, or medical card. Failure to complete the update by August 28 may result in a non-compliant CDL. While a physical copy of a passed medical exam and current license will be temporarily accepted, drivers should not wait to get into compliance.

“We strongly encourage all CDL holders with a K restriction to take advantage of these extended hours,” said Jeannelle Yitagesu, Director of Driver Licensing. “This final month is critical to ensure every driver remains compliant and continues operating without interruption.”

Drivers should arrive with required documentation and plan ahead, as August is expected to be a high traffic month at exam stations.
