Two people were injured in a semi-crash near Mitchell Saturday morning. Mitchell Fire Department Battalion Chief Zach Dalrymple says it happened around 6:20 am. “A semi-traveling east on I-90 just west of Exit 332 veered off to the south, went off, ended up going across Grassland Drive down into the open field just to the east of Grasslands and tipped on its side there,” said Dalrymple.
First responders used extrication tools to remove the adult male and female occupants and transport them to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. There’s no word on their conditions.
Dalrymple says two other riders were trapped in the cab as well. “There were two four-legged friends,” Dalrymple said. “One of those we were able to get a hold of pretty quick, and the other was guarding the owner quite well until we got him out, then we were finally able to get the other dog out.”
The dogs appeared shaken and confused but otherwise unharmed. Mitchell Police Department Community Resources took the dogs to a safe place.
Dalrymple says a small amount of fuel spilled and was neutralized with water. He says the semi was carrying a load of cheese.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
