The Alexandria Angels have locked down the No. 1 seed heading into the District 5B amateur baseball tournament, which is scheduled to run July 23-31 in Platte.
The eight-team tournament will decide five representatives for the upcoming South Dakota state amateur baseball tournament, held Aug. 5-16 at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Alexandria earned the top seed over the Parkston Mudcats after both teams finished the Sunshine League regular season with identical 11-3 records. The Angels claimed the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the regular-season series against the Mudcats.
Tournament action opens Thursday, July 23, with Alexandria facing the No. 8 seed Corsica Horned Frogs at 6 p.m., followed by a matchup between the No. 4 Winner/Colome Pheasants and the No. 5 host Platte Killer Tomatoes at 8 p.m.
First-round games continue Friday, July 24, when the No. 2 Parkston Mudcats play the No. 7 Mount Vernon Mustangs at 6 p.m. The opening round concludes with the No. 3 Parkston Devil Rays taking on the No. 6 Dimock/Emery Raptors at 8 p.m.
The four opening-round winners will advance to the championship semifinals on Sunday, July 26, automatically securing berths in the state tournament. Teams that drop their opening games will move to the elimination bracket, with games scheduled for July 28 and July 30 to determine the remaining state tournament qualifiers.
The District 5B championship game is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m., immediately following a 6 p.m. last-chance elimination game that will decide the final state tournament spot.
