Alexandria, Volga advance to Class B state amateur quarterfinals

MITCHELL, S.D. – Alexandria and Volga advanced to the Class B state amateur baseball tournament quarterfinals Monday night at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Alexandria rolled past Wynot, Nebraska, 11-1 in seven innings. Dakota Munger hit a two-run homer in the first inning, while Ben Wilber and Pierce Smith each hit two-run doubles in the fourth. Preston Nedved of Platte added a three-run homer in the sixth as the Angels scored five runs in the inning.

A.J. Wilber pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts. Alexandria improved to 17-3 and will face Volga in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mitchell.

Volga advanced with a 7-2 victory over Lennox. The Cormorants collected 12 hits, with Austin Buysse recording two hits and two RBIs and Noah Puetz adding three hits and an RBI. Trevor Olson pitched seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out seven.

The second round continues Tuesday with Clark facing Tabor at 5:30 p.m., followed by Hartford-Humboldt and the Dell Rapids Mudcats at 8 p.m.
